2d background image for 3d integration?

Hello, I’m guessing this could be an answered question, but my searches have come up insufficient.

My question to Znation is whether or not there is a way to place a 2d image in the background of zbrush and then fit my ztool within it. I am a digital painter and I’d like to take 3d models I make in zbrush and place them within one of my 2d paintings. I could export obj files and then take the model to photoshop and use it’s rudimentary 3d tools but I’d rather work this part in zbrush were I have access to the powerful matcaps and rendering options.

I’ve tried to use the lightcap background system but it distorts my paintings since they are not panoramic. Any ideas. I’d be very grateful. Thanks for any considerations.

If you want to use BPR render, you could use a Plane and fill it with the Flat Color material then apply your image as a Texture Map in Tool>Texture Map.

You would change the Document size as in step 2 below and zoom out (Zoom Document) to see whole document then scale the Plane to fit exactly within it. Then import your image in the Texture menu then select it in Tool>Texture Map.

Note: the below will only work if you use Best render (won’t work with BPR render). I have no idea why the background disappears when you use BPR.

  1. Select the ‘Flat Color’ material in the Standard Materials palette.

  2. In the ‘Document’ menu, turn ‘Pro’ off and change Width and Height to the size of the image you will be using. Click the ‘Resize’ button and answer yes to the popup dialog. Click on ‘Import’ button and import your image. Using the ‘Zoom’ button (Zoom Document), zoom out until you see the whole image.
