2 problems, 1 question from a rookie

Hi guys, I’m a complete rookie with Zbrush so I hope you’ll bear with me if some of my questions are ones you’ve seen many times before.

I’ve started my learning through the Eat3D Introduction to Zbrush video tutorial - the one where they begin by sculpting a severed head (“you can sculpt a good head in 30 minutes”?! I’ve got a lot of speed practicing to do!)

I’ve managed to follow the tutorial quite thoroughly, but I’ve run into a couple of queries that are either not addressed in the video or that I’ve accidentily overlooked. I’ve watched and re-watched the videos as I’ve been going through though and seen no mention.

  1. The first query is about materials. As the author of the video makes the head, it seems to be one single mesh with no subtools or anything like that. When he gets to the texture painting stage, he paints the skin and then he turns off “rgb” and “zadd”, and then selects “m” for materials. He then picks out the “Toy Plastic” material and starts painting over the eyes. He does this again for the blood and gore on the neck to give it a shiny surface.

However, when I try to do this for the eyes, seemingly following the same rules, the moment I select “Toy Plastic”, or any other material, the material surface of the entire head changes instantly to that new material. So the skin I’ve painted (with the standard material) on the whole head looks shiny like plastic too.

How come I cannot go to “Toy Plastic” without changing the whole object? I just want to paint the eyes and leave the skin as it is. I’ve searched for the problem on these forums and others, but only found one topic on it, where the answer wasn’t given. Perhaps I haven’t put the right keywords in as I’m sure there is an obvious solution.

  1. Since closing the document where I’d made a head with painted skin on it, I’ve been unable to get it back. I know there was two ways of saving, tools and documents. When I bring my head back as a ztool, it’s not got the texture. I’m sure there’s no issue there and it’s to be expected. However, when I load the document I saved with the texture on, what I see is a texture where the main peach colour is missing. What I’m left with is a few faint shades here and there of different colours (blue, red, green…) over a grey scuplture. It’s like it’s gone back to the undercoating that I’d made after a few minutes. Can anyone shed any light on this so I can avoid it in future?

  2. This one is more a question than a problem. I’ve noticed a few times that on Zbrush when starting up, if I drag my ztool onto the canvas, I can then click “edit” to do some sculpting. However, if I drag my ztool out and then accidentily do it again, the “edit” button is no longer clickable. Theres been a number of instances where I’ve found the button unclickable.

If I accidentily stumble into this situation, is there anything I should know that I currently don’t so that I can get back into edit mode?

I find that the Zbrush interface is really confusing starting out, which is why I’m running into so many problems. I’m sure it’ll become a piece of cake when I’m experienced, but for now it’s like a 10,000 piece jigsaw. Any answers/help you guys can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Materials need to be applied just like color.

Turn on M - turn off RGB and Z
select a material you’d like to “fill” the mesh with.
color.fill object

Select a new material (toy plastic).
paint in the areas that you’d like the new material to be applied.

Draw out your .ztl on the canvas, enter edit mode.
tool.polypaint.colorize

If you can’t enter edit mode it’s because you’ve switched brushes most likely.
Ctrl+N (document.new document) to clear the canvas.
draw out a new one, enter edit mode (T).

Thanks, friend. That’s answers to 1, 2 and 3. Nicely done. Good show. I now have my head back fully textured and with toy plastic eyes.
