hey all-
going to buy me a new mac next week.
i have the choice of getting the older i7, with a quad-core at 2.93 ghz or the newest 3.4 ghz quad-core setup.
the older model i can get for $1500. the newer will run me $2500.
both machines do hyper threading.
will i notice the difference in speed?
if so- will it be a fundamentally huge difference?
is said difference worth $1000.00?

you will notice a difference. If you’re working on both at the same time. Will you notice if you don’t really render that often. Nope.
I would go for the 2.9 personally. Granted I have a render box sitting in the corner so CPU isn’t all that important to me.
The 3.4 will give you basically another 2ghz after all the computation comes in if all the cpu’s are running which basically only happens during render time.

saving that cash certainly won’t break my heart- and i can deal with extra time during renders. it’s gonna be faster than i’m used to now at any rate, considering the speed tests i’ve seen between my mac mini and the quad 2.93.
also- forgive my ignorance, please… but what’s a render box?

A render box is just a server type computer that sits in the back and has tons of CPU’s in it. Think small render farm.
