10,000$ reward for sucessful Windows XP Emulator

Wow!

I hope someone meets this challenge… This would help the Linux comunity greatly…

it also may allow me to use Zbrush 2 under Linux 8)

http://archives.free.net.ph/message/20050921.093916.4717740b.en.html

If I had Zbrush 2 in linux, I would never have to boot into windows 8)

I much prefer KDE to windows.

Haha, right…it’s certainly possible, but it would be a hell of a lot of work, at least a few years for a small team and then what do they get for it:

“Thanks, here’s $10,000 to divide amongst yourselves, and we get the rights to the software you just made us.”

So if it takes a team of 8 ppl 3 yrs then that’s like paying each person $400 a year.

heh!

that sounds like my first job

yea,

I agree, it is not a verry good deal… if someone made a windows emulator that worked better than WINE, Cedega, VMware or crossover, they could make far more than 10,000$ in the first few weeks…

they would probably loose it to M$ lawsuits too

actualy they way M$ is gaining government support with its lawsuits, they would probably have the programmers appear before a fireing squad.

Thanks for the comment stuh505 :):+1: I agree it would be kind of a raw deal.

Hmm, good question there.

I’m no expert, but I don’t think Microsoft would have a leg to stand on actually…because we’re not talking about making a Windows Emulator, and we’re not talking about changing bits of Microsoft code either.

All we’re talking about is writing a linux program that acts as a virtual machine to specific programs. So, you’d be writing all new code…you would be writing using the linux API not the windows API, you would need to translate windows instructions into equivalent linux instructions.

Every program written for windows is going to be tapping into the windows API and Microsoft hasn’t been able to shut down the development of specific windows programs they dont like, like netscape or mozilla…they just cant.

Microsoft has somewhat of a “natural monopoly” going…but something like this would put them on somewhat more equal ground, allowing quality of a product to actually have more of an effect than platform of the product.

I’m sure Microsoft has copyrighted certain techniques for how their operating system works…but once again…you wouldn’t be copying any of that.

If it takes eight people three years, they don’t get a cent to divide amongst themselves.

The challenge was posted September 21st, 2005. Deadline’s October 5th, same year. Those dates are two weeks apart.

Well, they still have a few days…

heh, going to go back and see if anyone won on the 6th LOL :):+1:

I realy doubt it also… I read about it on slashdot, most people there think it is impossible too…

heh! would be cool (and a miricle) if someone actualy did it

well, I am off to find me a new spellchecker, have a nice day

Well Linux is not just in it for the money, if you are not supporting the opensource spirit i think you will be better of developing for windows :stuck_out_tongue:
