1 Hour Speed Sculpts Sketchbook

Happy New Year everyone! :+1:

Hi guys, I’m a new member here in Zbrush Central and I have to say that Zbrush is the best software that I’ve ever used. I can just go lose in my own little world as an artist with this program, I just loooove it.

For my artistic 2014 New Year’s resolution, my goal is to master digital sculpting the human anatomy and also to work on my speed in sculpting. My plan to reach this goal(aside from doing long-term personal 3d projects) is to memorize the skeleton names and muscle names along with their origin and insertions that show on the human body surface. To work on my speed, I plan to sculpt in ZBrush using Zspheres turned into Adaptive Skin(but will later explore with Dynamesh) with a time frame of only 1 hour for each sculpt. I plan to create a 1 hour speed sculpt at least 3 times a week in which I will be posting them here. Each sculpt will consist of either a full human body(t-pose or dynamic) or just 1 body part. I decided to post a topic here to keep me more motivated and for everyone to provide any tips or constructive criticism. Before the year 2014 ends, I expect to look at my very first post here and be proud of myself because of my vast improvement.

Here’s my 1 hour sculpt for today:

My attempt to create the face of Andy Whitfield in 1 hour, this time I started with a Sphere turn into polymesh 3d and then Dynameshed it …I might turn this into a long term project and also do the rest of the body and armor

My 1 hour sculpt for today, once again, I started with Zspheres, used transposed tools to pose her, and then turned into Adaptive Skin:

Just felt like giving some encouragement!
It’s clear that you’re starting out, but there is already something in your sculpts I like a lot.
And clear improvement in your last model.
So good job, keep it up!

Hi Matt, thanks for the encouragement
I would appreciate it if you can also take a look at my long term project and provide constructive criticism here: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?183249-Hugh-Jackman-The-Wolverine-Project

Hello You,

nice sculpts - i like the full figures.
One way to improve them would be
to think about static features and
start with one… ie: sternum.

then work your way along those
static features to get some more
structure.

thats the difficult part of the pose.
ie: how the upper leg connects to
the hip and so on. if you want to
improve your models look into the
tool which ‘drag + selects/masks’
then move…

regards,
Fox

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice. I get what you mean about the upper leg connecting to the hip, it gets kinda confusing especially when the character is posed. That’s one of the areas that I need to focus on.

Which tool are you speaking of that drags+select/mask??

started with a sphere3d for this 1 hr Torso study:

my speed sculpt for the day, started with zspheres, posed him, and then turned into Dynamesh:

I like your progress. Especially after seeing your Wolverine project. Keep it up. What kind of brushes do you use for speedsculpts? I suggest you to play with ClayTubes or ClayBuildup - they will give your sculpts more gestural and sketchy quality which are so important for 1-2 hour quick sculpts. Otherwise when forms and shapes aren’t finished yet but already smoothed they tend to look a bit vague. So IMHO keeping the surface quality loose and sketchy might help a lot

Hi there,
Thanks for your comment and tips. I actually use ClayBuild up for my speed sculpts, maybe I tend to overuse the Smooth brush that’s why the forms become too vague. But I will try out the Claytubes for my next speed sculpt, I never tried that before.

1 hour focus on the arm:

Got a chance to do another speed sculpt:

Nice sculpting ModernArtist! I can tell You are learning anatomy: You can sculpt very good muscle details. And overall structure is getting better. I would like to see your “slower” body sculptures too.

Anyways, if you keep up sculpting, You will be outstanding.

Hi Doc_Hot_Dog, thanks for the encouragement.
Feel free to look at my slower sculptures here, they are still works in progress, I would like to take my time with these:

Hey, those are very nice sculptures! Are those for games or do you think you could give them a pose? Especially Jackman got those nice muscle details. One thing although: what do you think, could Jackman have slightly more rounded rib cage? I mean that his figure could have a bit more daring impression if he had a bit more air in his lungs. Anyways, solid work I say.

Well I am practicing creating low poly game characters, and yes I will be posing them too on a stand or I might create or ask someone to make an environment for them. But yea you are right about the rib cage, I saw that it was flat and looked a bit weird, I’m in the process of fixing it  I will be posting more progress soon…

Avesome! I’ll be waiting for new stuff.
