Zmapper Normal Map won't render

Ok, this is my first problem. I created a texture in the texture tab for 4048x4048 and tried create a normal map. The message below appears, telling me to create any of those sized resolution map(including 4048). I tried all of it and none seems to work. I tried 2046x2046 and it worked once. Now I can’t get it to work anymore. But…I have 4 gigs of memory on this computer, an ATI fireGL v5000, so shouldn’t that be enough to create a normal map that size? I just don’t get it.

My other problem below is…I’ve reduced the texturemap to 2046x2046. After doing that, I keep getting this message. “Could not allocate memory, Subdividefaces”. So…in expert Pass 2, I reduced the samples to 1(white bar) then reduced subdivide to 1 white bar also. Still didn’t work!

I also get this message some times: “memory not allocated: store mesh data.” It is driving me crazy!

Oh and if its any help, when I load my model, even at low resolution, it does take awhile to open for some reason.

Regarding ZMapper:

Your texture needs to be a power of 2 in size. 4048 is NOT a power of 2. Neither is 2046.

The sizes that you can use are: 32x32, 64x64, 512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048 or 4096x4096.

As for your other problem, what are your system specs and what are your settings in Preferences>Mem?

Hey Aurick,
I think I maxed out the memory to 4096 compact memory.
Then I maxed out Mesh Polygon to 50.
I left HD Poly standard, I don’t know how to use it. I was reading a tutorial on it, and tried it, but I saw no difference. Not sure what it is yet still.
My undos and redos are 4 each. Then I compacted it.

My system spec is listed in my signature.

I fixed the exponential problem and it helped with zmapper thanks. I’m still getting wierd looking normal pop outs in my mask area. I added a lot of alpha brushes on it and its too strong. I’m going to play with that some more.

Thanks Aurick!

Well, for one thing your MaxPolysPerMesh setting is way too high. You’re trying to make ZBrush do more than your computer can handle. It’s likely that your model is too dense for the computer to successfully calculate.

With 4 GB of RAM I would put this setting to 16 for standard work. Don’t try going higher than 24 – and that will be really pushing it.

I dropped down the memory to 2gigs then 16-24 for my poly mesh. When I try to compact, nothing happens. :frowning:
Normally I would see the compact bar loading, but when I click on it now…I see nothing, and nothing happens. No matter what setting I chooose, it won’t seem to compact. I have idea what is going on now.

Virtual memory are the memory on the hard drive(C drive) itself right?
I have a 36 gig raptor and I only got 10 gigs left. Do you think that is the problem??

I’m trying to uninstall stuff right now to free some stuff up. I’m going to try and do a windows clean and then defrag it to see if it helps. Yesterday I was able to compact it, now I don’t know what’s going on. I restarted so many times. I’m really getting discouraged.

Again…

Compact Button in my preference WONT WORK anymore.

I keep clicking, clicking clicking, nothing happens. AHHHHH

ZBrush’s compact memory resides on the drive where ZBrush is installed. That drive should be kept with a nice chunk of free space, and should also be kept defragmented.

I got a bunch of folders in the vmem folder called “7000Fileblaaaaaa.mem”.
Is it ok to delete everything in this folder?

Do videocards have a lot to do with Zbrush? When I try to use zmapper, it tells me, the selected texture will be previewed in a size which is compatible with the capabilities of the existing video card.

PS: I still can’t compact my memory and I’m pretty sure its the main problem I’m having. I tried to uninstall my zbrush and reinstall it, but everything remained the same including the key. That didn’t solve my problem yet either.

And how come Maya 2008 can’t accept .tif displacement maps, but Maya 7.0 can?

It works fine in 7.0 when I uploaded.

It says this for Maya 2008.

Yes

ZBrush makes very little use of the video card. The exception is with ZMapper, which is rendered by the card rather than by ZBrush.

You’d have to take that up with Autodesk.
