ZBrushed horsie.. *whinny*

Made a ZBrush horse… I think hes about 2.2 million faces…

Plans for him… possibly make a 10k poly version, convert this model to a normal map, do a hair overlay onto the normal map… and create an alpha mane and tail…

Dunno… prolly just move on to something else…

Learned a lot about horse anatomy on this one…

Beautiful muscle work here. I love it…fantastic

great sculpting!

Really great horse man! The best I’ve seen.

You can check my wip here: http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=30135 it’s arnold Schwarzenegger… I like to do muscles and veins to with z it’s so cool!

Excellent piece. I am particularly loving the bone/muscle detail on the rear legs.
:+1:

Hey thanks guys…

I definetly learned quite a bit about Horse anatomy (hell, QUADRAPED anatomy).

Future plans for this are to potentially make a 20k poly ‘in game’ model which I would normal map with this model. Then, texture paint the fur (I have a diagram on horse hair flow), convert it to a normal map and overlay it onto the one generated from the defined body.

Perhaps slap an Aniostropic (sp?) shader on it… blah blah blah

Of course do the mane and tail as well (and other tufts of fur and whiskers around the hoofs and lips)

Thanks for looking. If there are any updates Ill post em

BigGuns… I was looking at that earlier. Im really digging it. Its refreshing to see someone do a muscular torso that doesnt look like its in a constant and total state of flexion. Looks like Arnie too… very cool

Such a beautiful horse  Very nice

Man, when it comes to ZBrush, you don’t horse around!
Just fantastic detail in this one. Great work!
Was it all done ZBrush or was another application involved?

great model

Cool stuff :+1: Could you actually recommend any sources regarding anatomy of the horse (and possibly other animals)?

Actually I’m modeling a horse at the monet
a good resource as alwayes is google
in the images ection
also www.3d.sk have some ref material

Nice modeling skills you have, I do not see any crits to make at all on this - If you do a nice texture, it will definitely be an excellent work.
While I’m at it, good job on Gun’s textures too. Congrats !

Bye !

Hey thanks all… Im glad you dig my ride :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as books go, I heavily used a book entitled: An Atlas of Animal anatomy for Artists… found here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486200825/102-6098637-5864949?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance

Has everything you need… for horses, there was a front view, top view, side view, bottom view, rear view, and tons of details… legs bent…etc…great resource

The book has mass detailed anatomy drawings of:

Horse
Dog
Lion
Cow and Bull
Stag, Roe, and Goat

Check it out!

Nice modeling job Pig! i mean that in the nicest way of course. Congrats on Gun as well, looks like its getting pretty good reviews.

This is the model that got me to try Zbrush. Awesome! 5 stars from me!

I have seen this attempted before (using the Atlas of Anatomy book you mentioned). You really brought it to life. A lot of people will copy the muscles in such detail that the horse looks like the disected dead carcas that it is. You really made it work. I think the muscles are a bit too defined for a real horse, but who cares, it isn’t a real horse. And somehow above it all you gave it the sense of skin. Great Feeling of skin thickness defineing the bone structures in the rear leg (the veins really help too). The front knees look a bit dead, maybe put some of the tendon indication back in there (but only to test it out). The face is the only part that really looks emaciated, but like I said… who cares… It is great work.

I don’t know why you have to do a head model to get on the top row… this belongs there. EXELLENT !!!

Hey thanks guys… yeahp I hope Gun does well. Tough market to sell on cowboy stuff, but time will tell.

chris - thanks… yeah hes a little cut. I used that book in tandem with as many real world images as I could get. What i was attempting was to imagine these horses without hair.

If I choose to take this piece further, this would be considered the base layer (thinking of it in Photoshop terms… almost like painting a texture) of the horse… then overlayed on top of that, would be the hair. That book I mentioned has a chart which shows the exact flow of growth for horse hair (amazing book!).

I suppose my reasoning behind this methodology is, even though this is not for any studio but is personal work, would be to have the option to get a few different horses out of this one mesh. One overlay of hair could be extremely short, which would show off the horse muscles… whereas the extreme opposite could be real shaggy, in which case these muscle groups would serve as macro-forms to grab light and show a less defined form. I think thats just my process due to having worked in games… most bang for the buck.

Truth be told, I was hardpressed to even add any veins into this base mesh… was considering doing that as an overlay to the normal map as well… but I was feeling a little crazy :stuck_out_tongue:

So adding that layer of fur, I feel would make this horse look like how most of you are envisioning.

Thanks guys…

Excellent job on the horse!

You guys will have sold at least 1 copy of Gun…an old western book and movie fan here couldn’t possibly pass this one up…the teasers look pretty cool tool.

I don’t know if its me or not but the link to your site isn’t working?
