zbrush to maya and back to zbrush

how do i take my high res, multi subd level sculpted zbrush mesh from zbrush into maya, so that i can pose it with a skeleton rig, and then bring it back into zbrush while keeping all the subdivision levels intact?

export your lowest level as an obj, import to maya, rig, pose, export your posed model as obj. in zbrush load your ztl, go to your lowest subdiv level, and import your posed obj. zbrush will then move the higher levels to match your pose.

you’ll get artifacts here and there, but for the most part it works quite well, considering I didn’t expect it to work at all.

Hey, I tried the same procedure (without the rigging part…) and got some really weird results when I tried to go up a subdivision level which you can see in the attached image. Any idea why this might happen?

I have been having the same issue. I haven’t reposed my model, but I did re- UV map my object. I have tried this method in ZBrush 2, and I didn’t have a problem. Is this a bug in Z3?

hey buffaloe, i get that same problem with MAX but MAYA seems to work fine so far. as far as i know MAX is not compatible with zbrush when updating a model. i went crazy trying to go to MAX to unwrap my model and bring it back to zbrush. finally i gave up.

Oh, and when you import your .obj into Maya, make sure you check ‘create multiple objects’ is set to FALSE in the Maya .obj import options. Thats one I always miss!

The reason for this is that your point/vertices are being numbered differently to and from each package. This problem is not seen directly with symetrical objects so you wont notice it flip. Check your import export options. To make sure its working right create a none symetrical object in Maya and export to Z then back again to Maya to make sure it looks the same on each import/export. Hopefully it will be fine after this.

Im a Maya user as well and I had the same problem too and as I was worried my blend shapes were screwed, this worked for me and all is good now…Hopefully it will work for Max too

Hmm, any idea what settings I need to check? Everything looks pretty normal in the Impost/Export options of both…

Well as I dont know what setting you use heres what I have for import and export for Maya (version 6)

Import YFlip
Export Y flip

Import Zflip
Export Zflip

hope this helps.

Where would you find those settings? I was checking in the Import options box in Maya and didn’t see those.

No, I think I may have confused you. These are the import export settings in Zbrush for objects from and to Maya…

Apologies for any confusion here…
