zBrush to 3DSMAX R5 (Moved to Q&T forum)

Hi all,

I just ‘discovered’ zbrush an now I dont know how I ever lived without it, but I cant seem to make the objects show up in 3dsmax- I have tried dxf and obj, and I can get the object in to max, and it renders, but it doesnt appear in the actual program- i.e. when I look at it in max, its just a blank window, but when I hit f9 it renders the face.

does anyone know where I can find a tutorial that will show exactly what buttons to press so that i can actually see it within max without rendering it

thanks

James

Based on your description, I think your normals are reversed, and your renderer is set to render double sided, so you only see it rendered. This is a guess, I think some screen shots would help, if it’s not the normals. Try playing with a normal modifier on your ZB object in Max.

yeah, when the normals are wrong you can see the 3d thing but its inside out, I cant see it at all, it only renders- anyway Ive attached a screenshot

how many polys is that, and how good is your graphic card? What renderer are you using in that perspective window(OGL/D3D) ?

That is indeed strange!! Never seen it b4.

I tried one with 128 faces and I couldnt see it, so I dont think its a memory issue, my laptop has a ATI Radeon card (I think) and its never really had a problem like this before, and I just noticed that if I draw anything else in 3d in max after I import the zbrush file I cant see that either- is it possible importing the file changed the renderer in max? i need to press new file to be able to see stuff in max again?

thanks for your time

James

Might want to try this.
When you export the object, give it a name.
Import it into Max, go to the selection by name and make sure it is listed there.
Select it, scale it larger, even if at first you don’t see it.
Once in awhile max will import at such a small size you will not see it.
One way of telling this is true is that in perspective view the grid is missing.
I had this problem with Poser models.

The size may be too small for Max to display in the viewport. I’ve encountered this bug myself. Try scaling the object dramatically and then it should appear.
