Zbrush Throttling M1 Macbook Air?

Have had an M1 Macbook air for a few months as a portable workstation, and its held up very well for multiple software, Zbrush performing excellently up until recently. After some new updates, my air has been crashing consistently when in Zbrush. I’ve gotten pink screens that seem to be a throttle crash. I contacted Apple support and they recommend I do a wipe of the system and reinstall everything. Pretty annoying, and I’m not convinced that would solve my problem.

I installed a cpu temp gauge to see what my air was getting to while using Zbrush, and the highest temp was 93C, which is fairly high. Not sure if it got higher - swapped to safari to give it a rest and not throttle, but it still crashed after a few seconds.

Are there any settings I can modify to reduce Zbrush’s impact on CPU usage? I attempted to change the max threads in performance, but it won’t let me change it from 7. Zbrush is an integral app for me on the air, and I can’t stress enough that it was performing almost flawlessly, which I was surprised to see on apple silicon.

I’ve gotten multiple crash reports - I can include them if they’re saved some where. Haven’t used OSX for years so I’m not sure where to find that stuff.

Hi @smessier

This is a really old issue on Macs. You can try turning off “Multithreaded IO” in “Preferences > Performance” to see if that helps, but you should really be contacting Pixologic Support for definitive answers.

I’ll try turning it off to see what happens.
