Zbrush, the end of box modeling?

Back then box modeling seems to be the only way to go when you want to model anything, and the only usage of zbrush was to add more details onto your character… However, it seems that zbrush has developed to a stage where it could replace the traditional box modeling… So the million dollar question is, would zbrush make the good old box modeling obsolete just like how polygon replace nurb and surfaces?

The main thing that makes zbrush so good now is zsphere, where you can just stack spheres to build your proxy model. This almost elimiate the need of building a proxy via box modeling since it seems like you can just convert the zsphere model into polygon with just a few clicks.

Tools such as polypaint, or decimation master also make it hell lot of easier for your model to be functional and effecient…

I am still clinging to good old box modeling where I add and adjust the detail of my characters by line flow redirection, but I just think that at this rate, zbrush will completely replace box modeling in the near future. Is this what is happening to the industry out right, namely gaming and movies?

Take a look at the most impressive models you find, in ZBCs top row or elsewhere, and youll see that 99% of the base meshes are made in the traditional way.
I can`t say I tried the new zpheres but from what I see they are more like a nice toy to play with than a replacement for poly modelling. Same as those voxels.

No

God forbid if I have to build my base model in ZB, I love it and all but…no.

There’s a lot of old school folks around that first learnt to model in traditional programs like Maya and 3D Studio. It’s almost second nature for them to create a base mesh using traditional modelling techniques.

There’s always going to be new and untrained (not brainwashed?) people coming along that prefer newer methods like ZSpheres and Voxels. Although in this game there’s a lot of pressure on people to learn the old techniques for fear of a potential employer not taking them seriously. I suspect this thread may even be motivated by that fear/insecurity that surrounds new methods

Ultimately though it should come down to how quick you can produce a decent model. Time=money…

If you can approach a game studio and say “Hey, I can produce 1000 good quality models in 10 minutes using ZSpheres” then it doesn’t matter how set in their ways they are, they’ll hire you on the spot!

So it’s down to the new wave of modelers to prove that newer methods are indeed faster.
