ZBrush .STL import/export

I am using AutoDesk Inventor on a PC and the latest version of ZBrush on a MacPro. Inventor allows me to export in several formats including .STL. I use .stl to 3D print our designs. I installed the 3D printer plugin to ZBrush. However, every time I try to import an .STL into ZBrush, I get an error. No other software package gives me problems with my .STL created on Inventor.

Ideally I would like to easily swap files between the two programs. Any suggestions?

ZBrush can import OBJ, DXF and .MA
STL and VRML are export-only formats.

I will double check, but I am quite sure that in the 3d printer plug-in menu it clearly states “import.”. Again, I will double check and report back with a screen shot if needed. I appreciate the reply!

As promised here is a screen shot of the Zplugin 3D Print exporter menu… It clearly states “STL Import” about 3/4 down the page.

Has anyone successfully imported an STL into Zbrush using this menu command?

I had forgotten that STL import was added to 3D Print Exporter.

What is the error that you are receiving? That will help a lot.

Aurick.

As you requested here is a shot of the error message. Thanks for the help!

Does anyone know about this error? Or have any experience with this plugin? The 3D printer interfacing was a huge selling point for this software. It is a real disappointment that it does not perform as indicated. Does Pixologic have a customer service number to call when their products underperform? Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I’m checking with the development team regarding what is happening to you. This is, however, a holiday weekend.

I’m also the person who answers the support number. So in this case a phone call won’t help. I won’t have any answers until I’ve been able to get info from the team. But as soon as I do, I will let you know here.

Aurick,

You are awesome. Thanks for your attention to this matter. By the way, What is a holiday? :stuck_out_tongue:

The team just replied with the following info:

  1. Two different versions of 3D Print Exporter might be installed, causing a conflict with each other. Please check the contents of your ZStartup\ZPlugs folder. You should have PrintingExporter_4R2b.zsc and a PrintingExporterData_4R2b folder. If you have any additional PrintingExporter files or folders, delete them.

  2. It’s also possible that there is a permissions/ownership problem. In this case, making sure that the ZStartup folder and enclosed items have Read & Write permission for the Everyone user group should resolve the issue.
