Zbrush rescaling scene by itself

Hi. I was wondering if there is a way for me to tell if a scene has been randomly scaled before doing tons of work.

I will have a scene in parallel with 3dsmax. Objects go back and forth correctly. Then sometimes out of nowhere the zbrush file changes everything and it isnt’ for a while that I bring an object in to Max and its tiny.

I usually try to help this issue by never touching the base/first Subtool in any file. But other than that I am never exactly sure what causes this.

I have a file with tons of poly-group fractured subtools. I brought them in to max and had to hand-scale from origin.

Later I brought in a single piece and it couldn’t be scaled from origin. It was in its own orientation and i had to hand-snap the verts to get things to line up!!!

This wreaks havoc on my process. So any tips on:

  • How to keep this from happening?
  • What causes it?
  • How to know when its happened?
  • How to fix it.

thanks.

I went back a few files and its fine. Is it possible the Do Visible -> Fix same names could have caused it? That is about the last thing I did.
There was a fail Subtool Export that lead to that (with out restarting zbrush i did it). May be that plays a part?

In this case anyways. In the past I have found messing with the base subtool to be the issue. Reimporting a new base mesh at 0 or whatever. Or deleting the first subtool.

Hello @rv_el

This video should answer many of your questions:

So basically, by default, or when the Export Scale is set to zero as it is in the the default polymesh 3d star primitive, Zbrush will auto-scale/center an .obj that is imported to work well in Zbrush. The settings required to restore it to its original size/position are stored in the tool export menu.

As long as you don’t further alter the scale or offset, or any of the settings in the Export menu, the tool should export at its original size/position.

“As long as you don’t further alter the scale or offset, or any of the settings in the Export menu, the tool should export at its original size/position.”

I’m believe i’m not touching anything. Unless there is perhaps some keyboard shortcut i’m accidentally hitting.

When I look at the setup shown in the video my Scale is 1. When I go to a older version it says 12.39405.

When I plug Scale and XYZ in from the older file it seems to fix it. So thanks for the fix!
I wonder what reset everything to 1 / 0.0.0

I tend to start a lot of my stuff by importing over/into the Cylinder.

Ok so so far from what I can tell its coming from Subtool Master Export and the prompt comes up “Object already exists, overwrite it”

After that operation it resets all of your Scale and XYZ in export.

Whats funky is I actually dont see the dupes. The folder is empty and it says …_20 already exists. I can see that subtool but i haven’t found its dupe.

All of these subtools have been created in Zbrush through tons of GrpSplit and Split hidden. Its naming them.

I don’t know if i had some bad sttings on the export? like Single Polygroup Per Subtool or whatever.

Anyways. Closed. Opened. DoVisible. Fix names. Subtool Master Export. Things seem ok.
