Zbrush random Crashing while working with file sizes larger then old 4 gig file limit

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if working past the old 4 gig .ztl file limit would cause Z-brush to crash a lot? It recovers and saves the file fine and I’m still able to work on the .ztl but it will randomly crash whenever I changed brushes or about to do an edit.

How much ram do you have?
Are you working in 4r8?
what are you mem settings in your preferences?
Does the same issue happen with a .zpr?
Can you just easily break the mesh into smaller chunks and/or decimate finishes pieces of your mesh, etc?

There was no hard 4gb limit on file size per se. The 4 gig limit applied to the amount of system Ram the 32 bit version of the program could utilize, which could in turn affect how large of a file systems could comfortably work with.

That said, yes. A 4gb file is quite large, and could cause stability problems on many systems. 4gb file size is well past the point where I could even reliably save files in 4r7.

Supposedly R8 has improved performance in this regard with large file sizes, but I would still avoid letting them get that large if at all possible.
