ZBrush not capturing displacement map correctly. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi guys,

I’ve used displacement many times in ZBrush and this is my first problem with it and I can’t figure out how to fix it.

I go between Modo and ZBrush and use ZBrush for making displacement maps. I have this mesh sculpted in ZBrush:

My UV’s are correct and the mesh is fine, I’m using the same export settings that I always use when exporting maps for Modo but when I render the image with the map I get this (notice the anomalies on the band):

I narrowed it down to the map itself. Take a look here:

For some reason there are these crazy sharp transitions occurring where the anomalies are on the rendered image. I can’t figure out why. I even redid all my sculpting and have the same problem.

My export options are:

And since ZBrush produces a TIF I open it in Photoshop and save it as an OpenEXR.

If anyone has any clue it would be a huge help. Here is the file if anyone wants to take a look:

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. I’ve been stuck on this for about a week.

Turn off Adaptive. That’s causing the problem. I don’t know why. But for most things it’s not necessary and just increases the map creation time enormously.

You can get Multi Map Exporter to create an EXR by making sure the 16bit file type is set to PSD by pressing the File names button under Export Options. With exr set in the Displacement options the map will be exported as EXR. This is a bug which will be fixed in the next release.

Also if you’ve no other subtools there’s no need to use Multi Map Exporter and you can just use the Tool>Displacement Map sub-palette to create the map.

I agree with Marcus, Adaptive is most likely the issue here. I rarely use it for Displacements now after last time I tried it and waited so long that I was able to take the dog for a walk and we got back home before the Displacement was generated.

Thanks guys! Turning off adaptive worked!

Also thank you for the tip about the file type
