Zbrush fails to start up

just purchased 4r3 and installed it on my macbook pro running os x lion, but it fails to load. Instead, I get a dialog which says

!:/APPLICATIONS?ZBRUSHOSX 4R3/ZResources/Images/OpenFileZLogo2

when i hit ok, it continues with a number of similar popups each pointing to a missing resource. The thing is, I don’t have a ZResources directory in the primary zbrush install. Neither can I seem to find any of the actual files that it is looking for.

Has anyone seen this?

P.s. one other data point. I set my hd up to be case sensitive. it was an option during formatting; I wonder if this is in any way connected. dont see how but…

Actually, that is the culprit. I don’t understand how it works, myself but I’ve seen a couple other cases like yours and after tearing our hair out trying to figure out what was wrong it turned out that they had both formatted their hard drives with that option turned on.

My best guess is that it actually corrupts the installation itself, which in turn leads to these phantom error messages. We are looking into ways to prevent the issue for future releases but I have don’t know how involved that will prove to be. (It might require a massive code overhaul, which could mean it has to be put off for a version or two because there are as yet very few users affected by it.) Obviously there’s nothing that can be done for the current release except to use a drive that is not case sensitive.

Based on the error message, I wonder if zbrush is looking for a config, failing to find it because of a discrepancy in capitalization, and falling back to a previous notion of where resources exist, embedded in the code. That seems more likely than some sort of corruption of the actual install.
