ZBrush and Storyboarding ZScript(s)

Filmmaking Storyboard workflow - ZBrush and Storyboarding ZScript(s) and/or tutorials for using ZBrush as a Storyboard creator.
Thanks :+1:

There are no ZScripts explicitly for Storyboarding, but there are some well-known scripts and techniques that could be combined to create a pretty nice storyboarding system.

You probably know some of this…

I would envision using a combination of one of the sketching or paint-brush ZScripts, Kaz-G’s Brush Stocker and Southern’s ZSketcher being the main ones, and a large blank standard frame or set of frames, along with some premade elements that could be saved as tools and brought in when needed.

The frame would simply be a .jpg or .psd 2D picture of a blank storyboard frame. Since sometimes there are three panels on a frame or storyboard sheet, and sometimes there is just one wide panel, etc., you might have several blank frames to choose from. These would be created in Photoshop or something that is better at text, since you would probably want to include a title block that includes the name of the movie, and has some blanks for frame number, approval signiature, etc.

Then you could sketch in 2D and even use some pre-made ZBrush tools for things like zoom-in arrows, etc. Of course, one advantage ZBrush has is that you can model a car, plane, spaceship, etc. (or import one) and use it repeatedly in whatever orientations are required.

Even though Photoshop-style layers are not supported in ZBrush, there is a way to have the frame or a sketch on one layer, visible but slightly transparent, and sketch in black or color on a different layer.

There are also “cell-shader” materials that would allow a model or ZBrush tool to be rendered in a black and white or black, gray, and white mode.

Thank You for the information on putting together a storyboard system. I did a search on the two zscripts that you suggested and read some of the posts and downloaded the zscripts.

“a large blank standard frame or set of frames”
Which pixel count is best for 16:9 (I find that there are at lest two variations for pixel count for the 16:9) and the NSTC (again I find at least two variations and two DV which makes it at lest four) and two for film 2k and 4k

Are the “cell-shader” materials for ZBrush?

Hi Space
About the Black and White you have the Ink Material On this thread!
And this one By Kid of 50 Sketchbook
Pilou

Thank You Pilou for the links to Fouad B.’s Ink Material and Kid of 50’s Sketchbook.

Looking at the images in the posts at the links I think a Disney Style classical inking can be done.(though this is off topic to story boarding) by viewing Fouad B.’s Ultra or Infra realistic ? post within the posts and using the flat material and/or composite as shown in his post within the post.

Using Ink Material or Sketchbook in either flat material and/or composite save the image as a psd file Then use Ink Material or Sketchbook to black and white material and save the image as a psd file then bring into a graphics program that supports layers and eliminate the white and apply a colorize brown ink color then overlay the colorized brown ink over the flat material psd image or composite psd image and this should give the Disney Style classical inking.

If this can be done (the elimate white to transparent) in ZBrush is there a ZScript for it?
TIA

Hi Space
In Zbrush land, it’s the pure black who is transparent
So you can just inverse the image
Just inverse the RGB Curve level (menu Render/Adjustment

or maybe better inverse the Ink material
PĂŻlou
Ps Have you seen that the Ink material permit to work in real time from 3d object in Dysney Style?

“In Zbrush land, it’s the pure black who is transparent

By doing this I can get sepia (or any other color) for the black - is that correct?
TIA
