Zbrush and other 3D programs?

Hello Fellow ZBrushers!

I am looking for an affordable way to get a good 3D package that will be a good partner to ZBrush.

These are the ones I have been looking at:
-Strata 3D Pro
-Carrara Studio 3
-Cinema 4D CE 6
-Amorphium 3

If you have compared or work with these,
WHICH ONE would you recommend and WHY?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks amigos!

I can’t comment on any of the software you have listed, but there are two that I would add to that list.

Maya
Lightwave

Both are available on OS X. I currently have Maya for OS X, but I think I should have gotten Lightwave instead.

There are other options available too. Check out these free programs.

Wings3d.com

Blender.org

Thanks for your comments wchamlet.

The only thing with Maya and Lightwave is the price.

I am trying to decide between the more affordable packages.

Is the interface of Blender or Wings3D as user friendly as the ones on my list?

billhdz: you should definitely check out wings…a lot of people use it to compliment zbrush. As far as the other packages mentioned of course a lot of people use Maya, but for those of us that can’t afford that, Cinema seems to be another favorite and a nice package to compliment zbrush. Hopes this helps.

As for me, if I am not trying to do animation I try to do the entire image in ZBrush. It is very powerful, and it can give you great results if you are able to put the time into it.

It’s a tough choice (I’m a fairly recently converted LightWave man myself).

From that list, I’d go with Cinema 4D. There was even a free version available on a 3D World magazine content CD a few months ago. If you could find that… it would make the decision a no-brainer.

Actually, I do have the FREE “Cinema 4D CE 6” from the magazine. It’s not the latest version, but I have been playing with it. Maybe an upgrade would be something to look into, IF they let me upgrade from a magazine vesion.

The interface on Wings3D seems a little less friendly than Cinema 4D and other commercial packages. Is that true, or is it just me, as a new evaluator?

What do you folks think of “Carrara Studio 3” and “Amorphium 3” ?

I just found out that “Strata 3D Pro” does not export to .obj files.

Thanks for all the comments folks!!! Keep them coming!

Hey billhdz. Check out my post here

I posted almost the exact same question about a month ago. I got 45 replies so that might help you out.

I chose C4D 8.5 with the Advanced Render module. It has features like Subsurface Scattering, Dirt, and HDRI. Plus it’s not that expensive, compared to Maya, Lightwave, and 3DS. I’m happy with my choice.

Thanks Adam for the great link!!!

And thanks everyone for all of the great info. and comments!
You folks are the best!

The interface in Wings is actualy one of the best to be found. Just you and your model in front of you.

Let’s put it this way, no ton of fancy looking icons to learn, rather just plain text, not much cross screen travel going from icon to icon, rather a right click set of menu’s that pop up where ever your cursor is, and best of all, lot’s of screen realestate to model in.

and, if you learn to use your hotkeys for most of the functions then it’s pure poetry in motion to boxmodel with Wings3D.
