zbrush and bootcamp

is anyone here using zbrush via bootcamp on an intel mac yet? im about to buy a new mac, and buying windows / bootcamp just to be able to use zbrush is an awfully big expense when added to the price of zbrush.
does zbrush run smoothly with this setup? is performace affected? any bugs / glitches / weirdness i should be aware of?
thanks in advance

See Jason Belec’s thread called “Intel Inside Experiment”

yes, running ZBRush 3.0 and 3.1 in 32-bit windows via bootcamp on an intel mac (macbook pro in my experience) is stable–no problems at all.

go for it

thanks for the replies, ive read through that giant thread - to be fair, it sounds like a total *kin nightmare and a giant headache… an app that doesn’t wanna start up most of the time is just too much to take on.

smokebox - did you have all these problems with version 3.1? or is the new version more stable?

The only problems I’ve heard of are with bootcamp and ZBrush 2.0. I’ve had no problems whatsoever with ZB 3.0 and 3.1. I suppose it depends on your hardware, but I’ve had no problem at all on the 17" Macbook Pro and 2GB of RAM.

qbass00 it runs perfectly for me under Bootcamp on my imac. just be sure to dole out the little bit more for the extra ram. really makes a difference.

Hi,

yep, I’ll add my voice in here. ZB3/3.1 works great in BootCamp on my MacPro, no problems at all. It also works fine in VMWare or Parallels if you dont fancy the rebooting dance.

As an aside, it is useful to have access to either a BootCamp or VM XP because there are several more handy little 3D apps and extras that you can only run in Windows. I mention that in case it helps you justify the extra expense involved in getting it all set up.

Update; I’ve never had problems running under BootCamp, with the exception of the loss of using my Mac folders.

I’ve just installed the latest release candidate of Parallels Desktop 3.0 (5158) and it is much faster and allows for better RAM usage than previous 3.0 versions. It is very close to being finalized and will be a free update.

I prefer to use Parallels when Learning or practicing Zb 3. It allows me to access the Wiki via my Mac which is a lot safer than allowing Windows to access the Internet.
I can access tutorials and zscripts in my Zb2 installation folder from within Windows when using Parallels. Very convenient. :+1:

They main reason to use BootCamp is to get the maximum use of hardware resources devoted to Zbrush, when creating high density meshes and large documents. The downside is having to access everthing on your Mac from the Windows interface. :stuck_out_tongue:

The other nice thing about Parallels is that it can use the BootCamp partition, so that you don’t have to loose any more hard disk space to a virtual machine, and, most importantly, you can run from a single installation of Windows and Zbrush.
