ZBrush: A Key Component of Weta Digital's Modeling Pipeline

GO READ IT! http://www.zbrush.com/

Or download directly here.

I wonder, this was up yesterday…why didn’t we get a post by our head folks? They must be REALLY busy…hehhehe.

Its no matter. Looks like the team no longer needs digital river too. Nice!

Extract
“The revolutionary nature of ZBrush leads to Weta Digital creating a new approach to modeling hero creatures, digital doubles and props for film 3 in the trilogy. Throughout our work on “Lord of the Rings” we have been extracting displacement maps from high-resolution geometry. For films 1 and 2 we were obliged to use 3D scans of physical maquette to obtain this high resolution geometry, a time consuming and expensive process, because software didn’t exist that could sculpt geometric detail to the level required.”
“About ZBrush
ZBrush enables digital artists to create high-quality, original artwork in a highly creative and interactive environment. ZBrush is host to an extensive set of real-time 3D sculpting, 2D/3D projection painting, 3D texturing and deformation tools - seamlessly integrated in one intuitive environment. With instant feedback encompassing a unique synthesis of 2D and 3D capabilities in a single stand-alone tool, ZBrush offers tremendous flexibility and appeals to a wide audience”

So the forum will soon explode

Yowsa…

Sigh
Pixologic’s folks are sooo mean… :frowning: :frowning:

They keep saying “soon to be released new version”, but as far as I know, they have been saying it since 2002! This is torture!!!

Hi Cezar, have you seen this thread

pix 3rd from top

 damned… twice again…

Don’t you guys think this is getting a little old? I mean, I’ve been here for years, and every now and again we get these threads…
Let me summarize…
It will be here when it’s here…
And besides…Where is the ‘art’ in this thread? We have a Community Forum specifically for these sorts of ‘tail-chasing’ exercises.
Pardon my rant here, but this gets a little tiresome for those who come here for art…

I think they’re even meaner now :frowning:
I think the “announcement” was the press release too. Please, don’t tease us like this!!!

I agree that this should be in the community forum, but I disagree, however, with your reasoning. Some of us, including me, bought Zbrush under the impression the new version was to be out soon. And the features we bought the software for are not yet available to us. So our eagerness for the release is justified, mainly because we have been somewhat forced to wait for something that should have been available “Soon”.

I’m sure most of us are aware it will be here when it’s here, because that is reality. Speculation, enthusiasm, and anxiety are common only to those folks who actually care about when the new release is. It’s not a crime, and I don’t think it needs to be moderated. Pixologic created this issue, and hopefully for good reason. So I’m sure they would be moderating this if they didn’t like these types of threads.

But again, I agree that this shouldn’t be in the main art forum. I think MTB was just excited, and wanted everyone to see! Not a whole lot of new users/visitors are aware of the community forum at first glance.

I agree with your points, WC…
But…
I have been in this forum since 2001, and since VER.1.23, and I have watched this ‘cycle’ play out over and over.
I would like to use Displacement maps from ZBrush in my LightWave pieces, so I do know what you mean…
I just don’t see a practical use for these plaintive threads. All they do is cause anxiety, and Pixologic will release it when they are ready, so what use do these threads serve?
That was my point.
If one is unhappy with the situation, surely it would be better to write Pixologic directly, rather than stimulate these sorts of conversations that have no possibility of going anywhere…
(And as you see, it DID get moved to where it should have been in the first place…If it had been here, I would not have commented at all. )

quote:
surely it would be better to write Pixologic directly, rather than stimulate these sorts of conversations that have no possibility of going anywhere…

Writing Pixologic directly does not good either. I am new to ZBrush and I own my own graphics studio. I like to plan which tools I purchase and, as a result, I contacted Pixologic personally asking a few questions about the next version so I could plan my budget for applications, etc. I am in no hurry, but still I wanted to see if the next edition (free to me since I own v1.55b) would cause me to alter changes in work flow and thus in choices for other applications.

The answer I received back from Pixologic was basically, “We can’t tell you anything other than you will get the next edition for free.”

So I was left with the same information I already had.

Lol well I think my girlfriend told pixologic my lines. During “relations” she allways asks me when i’m going to give her next orgasm. With my creativity spent as it was I usually just tell her soon or don’t worry baby the next one is free(and worth the wait!). Well after a year of hearing the same dry lines she was really getting impatient so I had to think on my feet. I told her I would soon be making an anouncement.

What do you think folks? Am I in the clear?

I hope my humor did not offend. My point is that when you change the players, the communication transaction can be seen clearer when your not in the loop.
There is no doubt pixologic weaves digital magic. Lets just hope with all the fanfare and what not, that after their next release they can use a little magic and update their policies on customer/human relations. For example, silo devs have almost daily updates on what they are actually working on and are very direct when mentioning release dates. It’s quite refreshing actually.
I understand it’s their marketing/sale plan driving the nebulous responses to release date questions. Lets face it, their are a lot of fishes waiting for the next “bait”. Saying soon and free upgrade has hooked quite a few. Perhaps it would have been better to aggressively toss the bait in different ponds and be more direct about where they are going and when instead of just tricking the fish that were circling in wait. Once your in the boat the responses are the same.

All I know is that I wish I could tell the bank that my mortgage payment will be in soon and that they would be happy to get it over a year later.

FYI, I’m exuberant about the current version and am not impatient to see the next. Just not fond of inflexible policies of intentional vagueness.

I agree. I am not a “kiddie” and I am not looking for inside information. I run a business and I want to know what’s on the horizon as best as possible. Yes, I realize that I cannot count on Pixologic so I must make alternative plans and then I can be refreshingly surprised when the next version is released.

Hi all,
i think the next version will be explosive, but… i think some of us leave the zstreet for other tools more predictable.
For me 1.55b is enough, but for working people one year of waiting is an eternity…i have teach zbrush to some my friends (artist, web-designer, illustrator) and they leave the product because Pixologic do not share info (zbr format, new functionality, direction of develop (animations?),ecc.)
I hope Pixologic will gain new users with the new version…

cameyo

Nicely done, Matuka…
I think that sums up both the cause of the dissatisfaction, and at the same time, offers the solution…

communication and better human relations department

I’m a gemcutter by profession, and I know how my customers would feel about me, if I dealt with them the same way. I love ZBrush for what it is, and that is ONE tool in my toolbox. I have no ‘religious’ faith in corporations of any kind, do not join ‘cults’, and the only reason I’m not angry is because I get what I need now from ZBrush… But I also wish the ‘human relations’ aspect was being handled better to avoid frustration to the customer.

-Rhetorical mischief sincerely meant.

Creation of the ZBrush application suggests a level of investment, personal commitment, precision and mastery that goes beyond comprehension or simple comparison.

Those people that can accomplish such a feat can be considered impossibly gifted and exceptionally rare. That they are motivated to give of themselves at all is of such value to society that we would do well to remember.

Consider the ethics of those that possess such unusual abilities… What if they should look unadmiringly at the brave face of consumerism? What if money, and the pretense of its value loses its appeal? What then exactly?

What security do you have as a consumer? What more or less is there by standing unappreciative of the epic achievement going on right here behind the scenes?

Next to the priceless quality of what is offered, how can we fail but to consider ourselves thieves?

:p

What … a bunch of non-sense  .

In any case (rhetorical mischief aside  ), I don’t think anyone that truly uses ZBrush is doubting the “gift” of the creators, etc.
