ZBrush 4R7 64-bit using too much memory?

Hello, I am having an issue where Zbrush 64 bit uses up almost all my memory after a long period of time using it. It gets to the point where it will freeze and crash at a certain point, usually after a very long autosave. Its becoming very hard to be productive and have other application open because ZBrush is hogging all my RAM. Is there some way to fix this? Thank you.

Yes there seems to be some issues with memory leakage, amongst other things. We are after all beta testing on a mass scale. I recommend keeping a close eye on the memory usage and periodically restart ZBrush, then resave the project at the refreshed memory levels

Haven’t experiences memory leaking so far. Left my zbrush for whole night and there was no increased memory usage.
Memory leaking mean that software is increasing memory usage by himself without user input. (maybe im wrong with this)

From my own experience zbrush 4r7 x64 keeps all undo history in RAM. and it was only one source of increased memory usage that I have found. When there is no more RAM then it’s start to fill Scratch Disk.

Please keep in mind that when You work on high poly model it can fiil RAM quite fast with undo history.

There are 3 solutions.

  1. Adjust Max Undos in Undo History in “Preferences -> Undo History”

  2. Clear undo history when You don’t need it anymore. “Edit -> DelUH”

  3. Flush all memory used by Zbrush to Scratch Disk “Preferences -> Mem -> Compact Now”

Hope it solves your problems with memory usage

Not necessarily. There could also be a leak that only occurs during specific actions. So running a program without it doing anything might not see the leak, but when a user is constantly running certain actions it can occur.

With Zbrush I’ve gotten in the habit of shutting it down and restarting it if I’m working long periods of time with it. This was even before R7. I like to clear out the tools area and other things just to keep it running smooth. I seem to have less crashing in general when I do this.

That make sense… Thanks.
I have similar habits… But instead of restarting I run macro which is loading clean project file that I saved with settings I want.
Now each time I want to get rid of the unwanted tools from Tool Pallet, or just clean memory I just run that macro.
It gives me same results as “Initialise” but with star in the centre in edit mode with few other settings that I had to switch on and off after each restart.
I have even added this macro to startup config so Zbrush is loading that particular project each time I start or restart Zbrush.
Quite useful and time saving and I always have settings I want.
