Zbrush 4R3 Crashing

Hi,

I’ve been having a problem with Zbrush crashing today, and I’ve been unable to resolve the issue myself.

It crashes under the following circumstances:

  • Open Zbrush, Open Project, navigate to one folder in ‘My Documents’ (My Documetns being the default fodler) and Zbrush crashes.
  • Open an explorer window, navigate to the directory, right click on the Zbrush file and clik to open in Zbrush. The project loads and I can use Zbrush, but when I go to save the file Zbrush crashes.
  • As above, but right clicking on an OBJ and selecting to open it in Zbrush
  • Open Zbrush, model away with standard primitives, then crashes when I go to save either the project or the ZTL tool.

THe only error message that I get is the standard Zbrush has been forced to close and your projects have been saved in … (not that I’ve ever seen it create a file at this point).

I’m pulling my hair out and would greatly appreciate some help from anyone that can offer advice, especially Pixologic themselves.

Just for reference, I’ve tried loading a variety of dirrent ZPR, ZTL and OBJ and then saving them; all of which opened and saved perfectly before today. Also, I have Widnows Update set to notify rather than download or install updates automatically, so I know that there’s nothing new been installed. The last system restore point is several days old, and I’ve successfulyl used Zbrush in the interveneing time.

Big thanks in advance!

Jim

I’ve kind of solved this issue, thanks to a very techie partner

In a Windows Explorer window, hit Alt to access the menu, hit Tools, View tab, and then at the top under the ‘Files and Folders’ section there’s an option to ‘Always show icons, never thumbnails’. I checked that and, hey presto, problem solved.

After I poste dthe original problem, I tried to open a Word document, and had the same issue. It seems to be an issue with one of the drivers that creates thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I’ve no idea which one, but checking the above box solves it… ie nothing to do with Zbrush.

I wanted to post an update to let people know there’s no need to look into this, but also so that someone else who has a similar issue can search the forum and hopefully find this of use.

Cheers,

Jim
