Zbrush 4 R3 Memory Error on startup

Dear Forum,
I have used Zbrush 3, 3.5, 4, & 4 R2 without problem.

When I installed the Z4 R3 update, I started to get the following message on startup:

"Memory Error
Sorry, this action could not be completed successfully due to insufficient ammount of system memory.

Note: insufficient memory is a reult of edting a 3D mesh with highre polygon count than this system is capable of handling."

I get this messsage before I have even selected a tool to load into memory or draw on to the screen. All I can do is keep going “OK” to the dialogue boxes that appear, then the application closes. This doesn’t allow me to get at the memory section of the preferences to increase the amount of system memory that the program uses.

My PC has 8 Gb of RAM, and 95 Gb of spare HD space. It is running Windows 7, 64 bit.

I have looked at the other posts in this forum, and tried changing folder option “always show icons, never thumbnails.” This didn’t resolve the problem.

I hope that you can help. Although Zbrush 4 will run on my PC, I really want to be using R3.

Hope that you can help me.

Tim

It sounds like there’s a problem with permissions. Were you logged onto the computer as an administrator when you updated? If not, that would explain this.

At this point my recommendation is to submit a Support ticket to get a new download link. That will give you the stand-alone installer for 4R3, which should then resolve whatever went wrong with the updater.

Dear Aurick,
I have followed your advice, and with the patient help of Pixologic Support, I have now got R3 working!
Getting Zbrush 4 R3 to work was a bit of a saga but I want to share my experience to help other readers of this forum.

I have used Zbrush since V3. Thus I had working versions of Zbrush 3.5 and Zbrush 4 on my hard drive. It seems that these older working versions may have intereferred with R3 working properly. I followed the advice of Pixologic Support and uninstalled all older versions of the software and deleted all shortcuts and the Pixologic folder. Unfortunately, I managed to corrupt Zbrush 4 when uninstalling it. Unsurprisingly, Zbrush 4 R3 presented the same memory errors when I tried to install it at this point.

I was then forced to format my PC & re-install Windows 7 64 bit. I re-downloaded Zbrush, and tried to install it. This time, when I tried to run the program, I got the following error: “the application failed to start properly because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.”

After more help from Pixologic Support it seemed that the issue was Microsoft .NET framework. The resolution to this issue lay in the “Help Troubleshoot” folder in Zbrush’s application folder. Pixologic had supplied 2 versions of the .NET framework for users to install. I tried the latest version first. This didn’t work. Then I tried the older version. After this, I ran Zbrush as the Administrator and ,finally, it worked. Hurray!

Thanks for your help and the help of the Support Team at Pixologic

I’m glad to know we’ve been able to get you running!

For the benefit of others who might read this: Basically, ZBrush relies upon certain components of Windows that are supposed to be there (but aren’t always, for one reason or other). Which of course is why the installers for the most commonly missing components are included with your ZBrush installation. :)
