Zbrush 4 flipping modeling on export - resolved

So I didnt have this problem before. but. i import my model into zbrush work on it, even have exported it back into my scene to update pieces of the model, the re import everything is fine. But not when i export it is like it is rotated 180 degrees and is not upside down and flipped. What in the world? Does anyone know why this happens? It has happened on 2 production models since i got z4 and its really annoying. Figuring out the scale stuff in the past was bad enough, now this? Some help would be great. Thanks

Katon

And I am also running windows 7, not sure if that matters.

Have you tried checking and changing the Import/Export settings under Preferences->importexport?

I have noticed this as well. I was working on a pretty short deadline at the time, so I couldn’t make note of the reproduction steps, but next time I run across it I will post it.

I do remember that it was a zsphere base-mesh, and it happened twice- once with GoZ to modo 401 SP2, and the other time was a direct OBJ export->import into modo 401 SP2. I/O preferences are consistent with what I was using in 3.5r3, and it doesn’t happen every time- so it’s definitely not that.

hOss- yeah I have checked them, I am not doing anything different than in previous versions.

eldee.s- same here. My process has not changed. I new how to fix the scaling issue, which I hope is fixed now, but instead now we have a flipping issue, haha. It doesn’t happen every time I export/import, but seems to be when I do something else. I have to pay attention.

Why cant zbrush just do these things like all other programs!! ahhh!! haha

Any other thoughts?

I have noticed that, specially when i made DisplacementMap and check flipV to export to C4D. After that i can work without problem

Hello Katonc

Can you put up a shot of your import/export preferences? You should have the following on.

iflipY
iflipZ
eflipY
eflipZ
Import Polygroups
iMFlipY
eMFlipY

Make sure these are on and save your settings as well.

Paul

here are my settings.

Like i said, this happens at weird times.

Hi

If this happens again check these preferences to make sure they were not turned off.

Paul

Hello

Another quick question for you. Did you use GoZ when this happened and have you ever used GoZ on this system. If so what is the other app?

Paul

I have tried using GoZ but it still isn’t working for me, that is another issue I cant seem to get help on. Posted on here, and sent in a ticket and have heard nothing. It crashes and says something like, GoztoMax.exe crashed, which makes no sense since I linked it to maya. Not sure what is going on with that. But yeah, next time it happens I will check these settings for sure. I wonder if it had to do with goz as well, I have to start paying more attention. Just wish these things didn’t happen, they are kind of crazy.

So it just flipped my model again. Instead of trying to fight it, i turned off all the importexport options in preferences except import polygroups, and it seems to work fine. I dont know why it would flip everytime it imports and exports, thats weird. We will see how long this works until i run into another problem, haha

Several potential answers

  • Did you hit the ESC key while GoZ running? If yes, it may interact with some preferences settings like the I/O settings.
  • To fix GoZ, go in the Preferences >> GoZ and click on the update path to Maya, then browse to your Maya.exe if GoZ can’t find it. Then click on Force Reinstall, then choose Maya. Windows may ask for an admin authorization, then enter your admin login / password.

Thanks Toyto,

I tried all this before, and it seems to fix it until i try to run it, then i get the goztomax.exe error i was talking about. Dont know why, I have kind of given up on it for now, until i have some time to fix it. It should would be nice. Thanks though

Toyto! One thing you did make me realize is, the problem of the flipping the model i think happens when i have tried using goz and it doesnt work. It seems to turn off all the export import options when you use Goz, so this must be what has done it in the past. Why would this happen, weird. I don’t get pixologics way of thinking, but whatever. Anyway if you guys are having this problem, see if it is when you try and run goz or have ran it.

Also I heard back from pixologic and this seemed to fix my issue, there are a few steps i didnt know about.

It seems that you mix software while installing GoZ for Maya.

Then please,

  • Go in Preferences >> GoZ
  • Click on "Update Path to Maya
  • When the window open after few seconds, if GoZ doesn’t find maya with a valid path, click on browse in your hard drive and select the Maya.app. The system window may have a “Save” button, don’t take care of the label, it’s an app selector. Even if it ask to overwrite, validate.
  • When done, still in the preference, click on “Force reinstall”, then choose Maya.
  • When done, click on the small “R” located on the right of the GoZ buttons in the Tool palette. When the window open, choose Maya.

Then GoZ should be ready to be use, and no more linked to 3DSMax.
