Zbrush 3.1 right click menu freeze

Zbrush 3.1 (same problem with 3.0,update didn’t help)
Windows XP SP2
Intel DualCore e4300
DDR2 2GB 800mhz
a lot free space on drive
Wacom Intuos

I’ve big problem with Zb 3.1 when I right click to display menu to change brush draw size it freezes and stop responding at all ,of course everything is lost.

It happens completly randomly, it’s not depended on anything - it can be various meshes with various polycount (even zbrush built ones spheres etc) with big or small polycount.I just use brush - and when I want to resize, right click, the menu is displayed and ZB3.1 is freezed - I can’t do anything from this event. It happen after one hours or 5 minutes.

Zb3.1 freezes only when I right click my pen tablet and the menu is displayed.

It’s latest version, clean installed, PreferencesMax is set fine. It’s not polycount issue because Zb 3.1 will mostly freeze before I will manage to max my memory.

I’ve found thread with similiar problem http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=49519&highlight=menu+freezes

  • any ideas how to solve it ?

It’s very important for us to have a baseline when trying to assist with situations like this.

Please follow this forum’s guidelines when posting any troubleshooting inquiry. With each troubleshooting post, please include your full system specs and any other pertinent information which will allow us to determine if this is one of the following: a) user error? b) Misunderstanding of a specific feature, such as its usage and limitations? c) An item which has already been resolved. d) An item which needs to be resolved.
IMPORTANT: Before posting a troubleshooting item, make sure that:

  1. You are using the latest ZBrush version.

  2. You have a ‘clean’ ZBrush install. i.e. remove any items which you have added (such as older ZScripts and other startup items) which may result in unexpected - and difficult to resolve - problems.

  3. You did not increase the PreferencesMax polygon count or Compact Mem to a level which can not be supported by your system specs.

Any threads that do not follow these guidelines will be closed. Thank you for your cooperation.

YES YES!!! I also got this. Finally someone. You know…I sent 2000 mails to pixologic.

Well anyways, it happens to me in 3 different machines, with clean ZB3 and ZB3.1. Actually when it freezes the smooth key (mayus) seems to respond, but nothing else, so pretty useless.

All machines are different going from a Dell inspiron 9400/ Intel T2400 / 2GB RAM/7900Go/+10 GB free
AMD AThlon dual 3800+/4GB/8800GTS/+100 GB free
AMD AThlon dual 3800+/2GB/ATI Fire GL something I forgot/+100 GB free

YAY!! I have it hung right now (must say after a long time). I’ll go home and sleep, then come back and see if on the morning someone has a quick solution  to ufreeze it, since it’s responding, but frozen in a zbrush way as I said before.

Thanks!

I’ve experienced this twice now too.

I’m going to try changing the right-click button on my tablet’s pen to the ‘s’ button so that only the draw-size slider will appear when I want to change brush-size.

I only recently got into the habit of using the right-click menu to change draw size, so perhaps this might be a work-around.

The weird thing is that ZBrush still runs when it ‘freezes’–I can see it ‘compacting mem (IDLE)’ in the status bar and the shift-button still switches to the smooth brush. The probelm is that all interactivity with ZBrush is lost.

My specs:
Dell Dimension 9200/XPS 410
Intel Core 2 6700 CPU
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
4GB RAM
+100GB free disk space
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS

I also recently enabled the ‘/3GB switch’ on my system but will hold on disabling that until I can determine if the right-click menu is the problem.

I have had this problem too, but I use the space bar to bring up the menu. I changed my hot keys so the space bar only brings up the draw size slider, this has helped allot, it only very occasionally freezes now usually when I am working really fast and accidentally double hit the space bar.
I have
ZB 3.1
Amd 5000+ Anthon64 Dual Core processors
2 GB memory
150+GB free disk space
GeForce 7600GT
And Windows XP Pro

I have dug deep into these forums and this issue is a persistent one. The “semi-freeze right-click menu bug” is one that Pixologic does not seem to have a solution for(these posts all get the same response). I’ve had it happen several times, both using right-click as well as the spacebar.

I would suggest until they find a fix, perhaps there could be some type of plugin that allows users to save TOOLS as well as documents, upon closing Zbrush. This would allow us to retain the changes we made and not lose so many precious hours in frustration.

I just want to say all i ever use is the popup menu along with a custom popup that i’ve both assigned to my tablet and pen, i must pop those up a few hundred times per session, and never have i encountered this error.

man, this program is the king of loosing work

Hello,
I have this same problem and it is very frustrating.

My computer is :

Dual Opteron 248
2gb ram
ATI X1650 Dual dvi graphics card
Logitech MX Laser Mouse
Wacom Intous 3 A4

Running Zbrush 3.1 on Windows XP64 Corporate Edition.

I have recorded this happening with a screen capture program.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma3dH0R62dM

This was very easy to recreate and took little more then the length of the video to get it to happen. Any updates/advice from pixologic, or anyone who has managed to get around this problem would be appriciated!

thanks

I also have it frozen as stated above. I use wacom intuos 3. Is this what everyone else is useing?

Anyway I would just like to have an option to turn off the right click menu item in zbrush so I dont have to go into my tablets settings evertime I transfer from zbrush to photoshop.

I dont think im allowed to post the dxdiag because its not my computer, but its an apple system running windows;

Windows xp pro
Intel Xeon 5150 @ 2.66GHz
2GB of ram 2.66GHz
Radeon X1900
Wacom intuos 3

Anuxinamoon, as i said i always use the popup, and i’m using the intuous 3, i have the popup mapped to my pen as “right click”, maybe thats the problem, do macs use two buttons like that? I’ve never had a freeze or a crash using the popup menu this way, nor with just my keyboard.
Also, why do you need to keep changing your tablet settings, you are allowed different settings per application.

ZBRUSH FREEZE PROBLEM SOLVING (MAYBE)
I just download the trial version and tring to do something…
zbrush freeze in 20 seconds…
try to find something on www…
no one know…

But after some try I found that when zbrush start, in task manager the affinity is set just for one processor. I just check the second processor and…it run perfectly.
(Task Manager->process->rightclick on zbrush.exe->affinity->select 2° processor)

I hope this is the solution for everyone…
I try to put my comment on CrazyBee thread, but I just can’t get thru…

I am planning to buy a Intuos 3 and would like to know if there are Major problems in using with zbrush 3.1. Has anyone solved this Freeze Probelm.

Thanks

no, but Intuos doesn’t matter. It also occurs when using mouse  happens to me twice a day average, I tried it with several windows installations on 4 different machines, on 2 different countries! at some point it will always happen. It’s just the wrong combination of keys, it involves right click + alt + left click

happened to me a couple of times as well but not often enough to cry [and I’m anal about saving nowadays so I didn’t lose much]. A colleague of mine had it happening to him all the time. I’ve noticed that him and many other people tend to pump up the memory preference setting to 4k, even though they only have a 32 bit system and 2 gigs of ram… after reducing his settings it seems to be less problematic [for the past couple of days at least  ]…maybe that’s a solution of sorts… just thinking aloud here

It is possible to assign a different hotkey to the Quick Menu. Just Ctrl+click the Preferences>Interface>Quick Menu button and choose the hotkey you want to use. If you use a tablet, you could then bind a pen button to the new keypress. If you use a mouse this would certainly involve a change in working but it might be worth it if you are finding this issue seriously problematic.

but that doesn’t change a thing as the freeze happens when you open the menu end left click right away, reproducible for me 8just right click, left click a few times, or space and left click, doesn’t matter) and destroyed my days of work all counted together, is there some way to overwrite zbrush with a save tool procedure? the UI is still reacting on shift ,but everything seams to be inactive, i’m getting crazy with this bug

when i’m killing zbrush with rightclick on the taskbar it asks to save the document, would it be possible for it to ask for the tool? maybe as an option, i personally don’t need the documents, guess many 3d artists don’t need them either, but as an option you wouldn’t hurt the illustrator dudes

:edit: maybe it helps, but all machines i tested it on, where intel machines

wow, there’s even a whole thread for this bug…

this is THE most frustrating bug… i agree with Neox… can’t we have instead of save document, save tool???

Ive lost work to this bug too, it’s very bad. I have seen if for several months. I save more often and have removed the right and middle click mapping from the wacom pen when using zbrush.

It happens about once a week or less. just infrequent enough to surprise me when I get stuck.

it seems related to opening right click while zbrush is busy with a heavy scene, either compacting memory or when I rotate or pan. the buttons on the wacom pen I use are very sensitive so it happened more often before I disabled them. I have had it freeze up with the mouse as well.

current system:
zbrush 3.1
vista64
4gb ram
intel core2 6600 2.4ghz
37gb of free space on hd

previous system:
zbrush 3.1
xp sp2
2gb ram
pentiumD 3ghz

I lose atleast 2 hrs of work a day do to this bug . And my teeth have been ground down to chiklets now!!! Does assigning s button to pen work better?
