Zbrush 3.0 won't launch

I just downloaded and installed Zbrush 3.0 and when I try and run it I get the following error.

“The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.”

and, the application log says;

“Activation context generation failed for “C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush3\ZBrush3.exe”. Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP,processorArchitecture=“x86”,publicKeyToken=“1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,type=“win32”,version=“8.0.50608.0” could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.”

under the details section it has the following;

Provider name SideBySide
EventId 33
[Qualifiers] 49049Level 2
Task 0
Keywords 0x80000000000000
Event Data Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP,processorArchitecture=“x86”,publicKeyToken=“1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,type=“win32”,version=“8.0.50608.0”
C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush3\ZBrush3.exe

What I am running;
Dell Precison 670
Dual Xeon 3.2Ghz processors
8Gb of ram
150Gb SCSI boot drive
300Gb SCSI work drive
Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit)

I’ve also check the Visual C++ installer log and it says it installed successfully.

That’s the long version of the problem. Short version is I’ve been waiting for this version of ZBrush for about a year now because I’m running a 64 bit box, it’s a long weekend here, and instead of playing with ZBrush I’m playing software/hardware detective. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have the same problem. i have vista32. i have tried to reinstall the c++ redist an intalled the c++ sp1 redist, still no change.

I’ve done pretty much the same, installed/uninstalled the c++ 32 and 64 bit versions from M$ and still no luck. I did receive an email from customer support about a week ago now saying that a new build was coming that would fix things.

It’s a little frustrating to say the least. I’ve had the software two weeks now and I’d be really to have ZBrush up and running. And, since it was a download I don’t even have the satisification of a box to look at. Hopefully things get sorted out soon.

i have now
uninstalled zbrush
uninstalled visual studio orcas
rebooted
installed zbrush

now it works

I was suspecting Orcas might be part of my problem as well. Is there a decent link available on how to manually uninstall it. Every time I’ve tried removing it the uninstaller pukes and says it’s already been uninstalled and won’t go any further.

WAII, you are a genius! Many thanks, I gave orcas the boot and wiped it from the machine, rebooted, reinstalled ZBrush and lo and behold I am now gazing in great anticipation at the intro screen. I’m off to lose some sleep and can hopefully post some works that can come close to the great stuff I see here.

Again, thanks!

no problem, good to that this realy was the problem, have fun with zbrush.
its a great tool^^

Is that orcas thing the same thing as Microsoft visual c++ in my add remove programs?
I removed it as well as zbrush and tried reinstalling zbrush and i still get that error, am i missing something?

I am also having the same problem, but i don’t have orcas on my pc, at least that i know of where to find it… I am in touch with customer support about the issue but yet to resolve it… what a “suck out”… spend all that money… well if they can resolve it i’ll be happy… until then! :mad:

Please try the following:

  1. Download and install the latest Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
  2. Run it via the Start menu.
  3. A list of installed programs should appear. Search out the C++ Redistributable entry, and choose the option to uninstall it.
  4. After successfully uninstalling, download the latest Microsoft C++ Redistributable and install it.
This should resolve the issue. You may also need right-click on the ZBrush3.exe (in the ZBrush 3 folder – NOT the desktop shortcut) and choose Properties. In the Compatibility tab, do the following:

  1. Set Run as Administrator and click Apply
  2. Set compatiblity to Win XP and click Apply
This last step probably isn’t necessary, but I’m including it just in case.

Yes, Customer support at pixologic had suggested to me to do the same as you have aurick, and it was successfull, someone should specify for noobs, or those less familiar with program languages, that Orcas, or visual studio is represented by C++, either way, that is after the fact. Yes I am happy that I have my zbrush back! If you are having the same problem as mentioned in this thread follow auricks advice and links as stated above.

The only other foreseeable problem that could come from all this, is that I had to call pixologic to reactivate, and authenticate licensing and what not, luckily, I have my serial, and reference numbers on hand, but suppose I hadn’t, would that mean i couldn’t activate it? I mean I’ve had zbrush since 2.5, then was granted the upgrade to 3.1 through pixologic, via cleverbridge, but how long was the span between 2.5 and 3.0 or 3.1, that is plenty of time to loose the serial and other information. Just throwing that out there.

We have records of your reference number and serial number, in case you ever lose that information. Your reference number is the easiest method to locate your account, but not the only method. Once we’ve been able to locate your account, we can resend your email with the serial number.

In all cases, we recommend that customers print the serial number email and keep it in their records. This provides them with a hard copy of both the serial number and the reference number.

Thanks for the information aurick, indeed, you are a supermoderator!
