ZB2 on new Mac Pro woes

Hey folks,

I have finally received my ZB2 serial number for my new Mac Pro 8 core, and when I try to launch ZB2, I just get the spinning bnech ball, with the app and the Welcome screen in the BG, asking me to click Next to get started - unfortunately, that’s where it stops.

ZB1.55 opens and runs fine, but it’s obviousy ZB2 I want to be using - I am assuming it’s not a UB issue, but I am not sure - any ideas??

Adam

Adam … we’re honoured to have you here, and it’s a shame your first post is a prob. Since aurick will probably suggest you mail Pixologic directly about this issue, I thought I’d save you a couple of hours waiting by saying it first.

Given the very imminent release of ZB3, you might not get an immediate response from them. I can well imagine the late nights and ordered chaos that is happening at Pixo HQ.

Hiya Adam! 8 core huh? Flash git! I’m guessing you’re already on 10.4.9? That seems to help so if you’re not, upgrade! Next keep trying to launch, just force quit and relaunch immediately, eventually it should run. Once you have it running go to prefs and turn off the welcome screen, remember to save prefs! It should launch fairly reliably now. I’ve got a four core and I can usually get ZB to launch once in 4-6 attempts, most Intel users find it launches nearly every time.

Hope that helps mate! Are you installing Windows to run ZB3?

Cheers - Baz

Moochie - I am flattered that you’re honored! - not sure what I did to deserve that, but thanks anyway! :*)

I was going to email Pixologic, but figured I’d save some time trying a couple of forums first - I was forgeting about the closeness of ZB3 - that might explain how long I waited for serials.

Baz - long time no talkie! - yeah, finally moved from my G5 to an Intel, and decided to go for the 8-core as soon as I saw the first Cinebench results - it renders at 4x my dual 2.5! - nice

I confess (sheepishly) after posting this thread, I decided to search for ‘Universal Binaries’ and discovered the extent of the problem! - i"ll persevere with the force quite/relaunch issue anyway, or maybe I’ll just stick with the existing copy on the G5 until ZB3 arrives. When exactly is that scheduled for anyway?

I am going to install XPPro on a separate volume too, although I hadn’t really thought about it specifically for ZB - are there any advantages?
I am hoping that Vue 6 Infinite might be a tad more stable than on OSX, where it can crash and take down the entire system! :frowning:

Anyway…

Thanks for the pointers guys!

Cheers
Adam

ZB3 is due next Tuesday! (May 15th) it won’t be available for Mac to begin with and ZB2 for Mac came out about 6 months after the Windows version if I remember rightly! So if you want to run ZB3 at all it’s your only choice, at least for a while. Pixologic have said Mac users can transfer to Windows for free so we can use ZB3 straight away, whether we can transfer back for free once the Mac version is out I don’t know.

As for Vue, I have Vue5i and the only time I tried to run it under Rosetta it caused a kernel panic! I haven’t had the guts to try it again lol!

Ah - now that kinda sucks! - I guess I will be running it on Windows for a while then.

kromekat, we have a thread that has been resolving this for the most part for people for some time. Start at the end and work back and you should get to the solution that should have you up and running quickly.

See my signature below…

If you still have issues, please post in that thread so we can get all involved to help you.

Lucky you, since selling my PC when I bought my Macpro I don’t have a version of Windows to use…

So my only option is to go out & buy Windows (again) just so I can run ZB3, which to me is a totally crap & expensive solution…

Really not happy ATM, feel like I’ve been shat on big style…

Jason - thanks, yes I will look at that tomorrow when I get back to me workstation!

Pete - Thanks for your input in the thread at CGTalk also - the link you posted simply goes to the sae ‘Intel’ thread!?

re: Windows - I have to say I was a little resentful to spend anything on a Windows operation system, since I have no love for it (or need normally), but there’s no denying that to get the best of all options, and make the most of the versatility of the Mac Pro, it’s the way forward. I didn’t realise I was going to be ‘needing’ it for a primary app so soon. I don’t mind shifting the license to Windows for ZB3. as long as I can switch it back when the Mac version is available.

Adam

My main gripe is having to buy Windows just to run ZB3, I’ve only just switched to Mac & to say it wasn’t cheap mission is an understatement, I just can’t justify buying that god awful OS, I switched to get away from it…

Glad you’re sorted though…

I agree, I didn’t really want to install Windows either and it’s not cheap to get a copy of XP pro (xp home will only use 2 of my 4 cores) On the other hand if ZB3 is as good as it looks it will soon pay for my Windows installation plus I can try some of the other SW I’ve been curious about. XSI, Mudbox and maybe Max!

Thanks guys,

I am now able to get into ZB2 on the Mac Pro without too many force quits!

Need to watch some tutorials again - I have forgotten a few things already argghhh!!!

Cheers
Adam

LOL! Yeah I forget the workflow when I haven’t used ZB for a while. Have you downloaded the Practical Guide? It’s covers most things and will jog your memory pretty efficiently!

Yeah I downloaded it at the time, and I also have an archive of tutor videos from the web, so I should be alright!
