ZB freezes on obj import

Hey Zaddicts. Has anyone ever had that problem: the first 2 obj’s i import always work, but more often than not when i import a 3rd ZB just freezes up on me.

I am of course selecting a primitive first before i import. Would love to give you more info, but it doesn’t seem to be a consistent problem. Just yesterday i imported at least 100 obj’s with no problem whatsoever, but just right now on the 3rd import ZB froze again.

So if anyone out there has an idea what could cause this, i would be more than happy to hear it!!

Specs: ZB3.5R3, Dual core Laptop with 6GB of memory, Wacom Intous 4 (but it happens on my workstation as well)

i’m a little confused, are you saying it freezes when you import that particular .obj, or when you import any 3rd obj?

also try using subtool master multi append for importing, that may help.

Hey spaceboy,

sorry for the confusion. Guess i’m just speaking too many languages at the same time  Anyway, it happens with any obj. Say i am working in ZB and load up the first obj, no problem. When i do the same thing a little later … ZB freezes - sometimes. That’s why Multi append won’t work. Good thinking though!

Can’t really tell to what it is related, hence this post. But it surely hasn’t got anything to do with point orders or the like, as i am just loading in a “fresh” obj. Just wanted to know if anyone else ever encountered this, before filing this under “yet another ZB quirk”

Basically for now i always save before importing so i won’t lose work. Never a bad thing anyway.

have you tried importing using the simplebrush instead of the star?

sometimes when loading heavy/large objs zbrush will seem to lock up, how long do you wait?

the only other thing i can think of is to start the program without any plugins and see if that works. also load one obj at a time and save it as a .ztl then later append those.

i’ve imported many objs and also used subtool master’s multi append and have not experienced what you are.

maybe scale is a issue? seems to be a running problem in this release, maybe the scales are too different from each other.

Hey spaceboy,

thanks for all your thoughts. I will try to alter my workflow in future projects. Maybe i can solve the problem like that. For now i can’t say that i have found THE solution, but maybe it’s a combination of all these things. I’ll let you know if i find something.

Edit: talking about scale, i have never experienced what most max or maya users are going through when it comes to the scale offset issue. I’m a Lightwave user and it looks like LW’s obj im/exporter works just perfect for ZB. Also i’ve developed my very own workflow that prevents me from having this issue (not that i developed it on purpose, it’s just the way i like to work). Will record a tutorial on this soon and post it in the tuts section.

YAP i recently faced this in 3.5R3

@markyng … at least one  was beginning to think i just had bad vibes !!

I suspect it’s something to do with clicking on something polysphere or something and having the 1st imported obj renamed as polysphere or 2 objects called polysphere. BUT i renamed them differently each time they come in, it still crashes.

so my go around was to import 2 obj and then load ztool, append them all into one ztool save it before i import the 3rd ztool and it crashes.

so this way I was able to import 2 objects each time instead of one, append to the last ztool and then attempt to import again and the zbrush crashes.

This sounds ridiculous… I’m sure someone knows it.
