ZB and 3ds Max Scale Issues...

I found a thread here at ZBCentral a while back explaining how to get scale correctly dialed in while using GoZ with other 3d apps, specifically I am using 3ds Max. I did as the thread explained but when I GoZ from Max to ZB my Brush is way super small. If I export from Max to my desktop and then import to ZB all is good.

What the heck am I missing to get this working?
Or what steps can I do to start to zero in on the correct setting?

Thanks!

When importing an OBJ into the PolyMesh3D Star, ZBrush will automatically adjust the scale so that the sculpting brushes work as well as possible. The amount of this scaling can be seen in the Tool>Export>Scale slider, which scales the model up or down again on export. However, if you use GoZ then this automatic scaling isn’t used, hence the problem you have found. There’s a simple solution:

  1. In Max, export your model, at actual size, as an OBJ.
  2. In ZBrush, first select the PolyMesh3D Star and then import the OBJ you exported at (1). (The PolyMesh3D Star has an export scale of 0. This tells ZBrush to auto-scale the imported mesh.)
  3. Make sure the name of your model in ZBrush is exactly the same as the name of the model in Max. This is important as GoZ uses the names to correctly transfer the model.
  4. In ZBrush, do what sculpting you want and then use GoZ to transfer your model back to Max. If all is well, your model will be updated correctly in Max.

You should now be able to use GoZ to go back and forth between ZBrush and Max without any scale issues.

I’m guessing that’s my thread you found. I’m planning on updating it and making it a little bit clearer. However I won’t be doing that until after 4R7 is released as some of these scaling issues may be fixed in the update.

The ideal to completely ignore the issue is to start the model in Zbrush.

When you GoZ Zbrush->3d Max (or other 3d package) then the Zbrush scaling is already transferred. When you Goz 3D Max -> Zbrush then that scaling isn’t applied unless the model already exists in Zbrush. This is why when you GoZ from Zbrush to 3D Max and then Goz back into Zbrush the scaling works, but if you originally start in 3D Max there can be some issues. There are different workarounds depending on your pipeline and needs.

Is this a one time model or a consistent scale and size you’d like to use, e.g., jewelry?

What size do you need the model for? 3D print? Rendering? Both? Imperial or metric and which one, cm, mm, etc.?

Marcus thanks will look into this and try!
Mental this would be a consistent scale factor that is for every model I create, I usually scale by feet.
