I would like to let everyone know about our real world materials/alpha library created with the Zbrush community in mind. If you are unfamiliar with XYZ RGB Inc, we are a high resolution 3d scanning bureau, nominated in 2004 for an Academy “Technical Achievement” Award for our high resolution 3d scanning used for films like The Return of the King and The Matrix trilogy.
We provide 3d scanning services to a wide range of clients, most of which are VFX and gaming companies, like EA, Weta Digital, Digital Domain, and Stan Winston Studios, to name a few. I’m sure some of the people I’ve worked with will be reading this post. :-)We also provide services to some of the world’s top manufacturing companies.
These new alpha materials are not based on photography or photoshop manipulation to create pseudo displacment maps, (i.e. desaturating and image and running a high-pass filter). Each channel is measured precisely and independently using proprietary technology and boasts pixel-to-object registration and true color.
They are true one of a kind images taken directly from: African elephants, Iguanas, Anaconda’s and many, many more. Each map has been carefully collected and laser scanned at a 100 micron resolution to create the alpha maps, and I address this because some people may not understand why the pricing is higher than pseudo displacement map libraries.
Many of our materials come with Diffuse, Displacement, Specular Intensity, Translucent Colour, Normal, Opacity Map and Reflection mask. We have 6 materials available for free download. I’ve attached some images of different test pieces to demonstrate the quality of the maps. I’ll post some more examples over the next few weeks. Enjoy.
