I am also from South Africa, and as such am also frustrated by the complete lack of a gaming industry. Although i’d rather look at it as an inspiration to start something. Its much like the animation industry over here, that’s only recently started gaining interest overseas…

Not so long ago (im talking a year or two) in South Africa, people still looked at me with confused frowns and patronizing smiles when i mentioned that i’m an animator. It simply wasn’t the kind of thing that people were used to. But there emmerged a monthly gathering called “animation exchange” where animators and scriptwriters and advertisers and cinematographers could all come together and share ideas and swop businesscards.
When it started, there where 10 people sparcely seated in a fairly large university classroom after hours. These days, so many people join that i can hardly find a seat anymore. It has brought animators out of the woodwork and shown them that they’re not alone and they can do something with their carreer.
Today I work in a large studio in Cape Town, doing animation service work for international companies that have started noticing SA.
To get back on topic a bit - This turnaround in the animation industry only started being possible after animators stopped fleeing South Africa in search for work and started talking to eachother to eventually start building up the whole industry. I believe the game industry here can be the same.

I’ve got Unity Indie and have started playing around with it, just replicating in 3D, the stuff i’ve done in Flash for ages. I can model a rough idea in Zbrush and pop it straight into unity complete with normalmaps. Unity is just as great for prototyping quick gameconcepts as Zbrush is for roughing a quick character or building. The combination is perfect for Indie developers.
Now that Unity is availabe on pc, and Zbrush is available on mac, I’m already noticing more of my friends seeing the potential for greatness. I hope gameDevs in SA can get together and join forces in the near future. Maybe a “gameExchange” is called for. Who’s in?
