Workflow for Cleaning Up Insides, Plugging Holes

Does anyone have suggestions for a workflow or a tutorial on an approach to cleaning up the insides of a figure?
I need to close many holes, get rid of bits of mesh that I can’t smooth away, etc.
With varying results, I’ve tried smoothing, trim tools, curve bridge brush, dynmeshing but I feel like I’m just hacking at this.
Below is an example of figure with lots issues created by merging multiple subtools and other things.

Any help would be appreciated.

I often use polygrouping:

“tool > polygroup > auto groups” will give each piece of debris an own group.
then you make only visible the big good pieces and “delete hidden”
if you aren’t sure to delete wrong parts you can make “split hidden” into an own subtool.

you can make with polygroups through this way visible all parts that you want to combine to one polygroup and “polygroups > group visible”.

if you combine this technique with masking or with just temporariily hiding mesh parts with CTR+Shift+ALT+drag it is more easy…

also polygroup from masking or group by normals, merge strayed groups etc. are possible option, it’s depending on the special piece of mesh which is visibile then.

Thanks. that helps. I’ve also been using dynamesh quite a bit. dynameshing with poly groups on is helpful sometimes.
