Wondering why...

I’m wondering why Zbrush promoters seem to be fixed on using monkeys or monster-looking people to promote their products and not also models that look like godesses or models in runways. I understand that monsters have interesting textures and it’s a challenge to form and create them. So does real humans! I haven’t really seen a 3d model that really, really look human. Somehow you’ll still detect some unrealness especially skin texture. Therefore it is still a challenge.

To me modeling ugly people is easy. Far too easy. Nobody will ever criticize you for making the lips thick, eyes and brows uneven, chin unusually large. In fact you can disfigure it all you want it will still create the same impression.

It makes it appear that Zbrush only specializes in modeling animals or monkeys, and use Poser to model humans…

First of all its the users who post their work…not the makers- or promoters as you call them- on this forum …so if you like great looking realistic humans i hope to see one( or two) made by you
Seriously … i like good looking people too…but at the same time all that perfect skin and well proportioned bodyparts look kinda boring… i admit its not easy to make a perfect looking person…but why invest all that time in something that looks like a photograph in the first place !

jantim

I kind of agree with Jantim, and at the same time I disagree. Humans are pretty normal to see in everyday life, so why try and make it part of your artistic vision? But, if you don’t have a strong understanding of anatomy, i.e. understand proper proportions, you won’t really be able to create realistic(or at least something that looks like it could be) monsters and monkeys.

Zbrush 2 is a pretty new program. Like anything new you want to try out all the different functions it has. I’m sure in time there will be more human-like work here at ZBC. But I doubt it will really replace what you already see here.

One thing to note, as well. Even though Zbrush can allow for a lot of geometry, you won’t be able to make much skin detail on a whole figure.

Personally I’ve been trying to breath life into my models for awhile. Not through animation, but in the model itself. It’s not an easy thing to do, but so far I’ve found that Zbrush has allowed me to create on a level I’ve never been able to do before. Even though I’ve seen a lot of monsters here at ZBC, that didn’t stop me from doing what I wanted to do with Zbrush. If you want to see more “realistic” humans here, start contributing.

Just my opinion.

Zbrush is a groundbreaking 3d application. There’s nothing like it. It’s unique. It’s one of those inventions that you could cite to honor humanity. Like most 3d applications, I just want to see it regarded as a general purpose 3d application, not just something you could use to draw monkeys and monsters. C’mon, guys, this is the 21st century. There seems to be no place for apes. People want to see not just monsters and monkeys but modern inventions: cell phones, robots, futuristic cars, appliances, modern structures, beautiful women garbed in futuristic dresses, etc.

Sure, one of these days I’ll send my own samples to this site to break the monotony. Frankly, I’m sick of seeing mutilated faces in this place.

Frankly, I’m sick of seeing the entire 3D world obsessed with creating human figures and shiny sports cars over and over and over again. They’re not the easiest things in the world to make, sure, but I think we’ve seen enough of them for a good long while. If people feel like making monsters, I think they should be able to do so with freedom. Also, I think another reason you see a lot of ‘mutilated faces’ on this forum is because Zbrush makes way for those who don’t have a great deal of modeling or artistic experience, and to put it bluntly- that’s the best they can do.

Zbrush is an artistic tool. People can make whatever they like, when they like, and how they like. It dosn’t matter if it’s really well done, really badly done, or the same old stuff we’ve seen a thousand times before. People are enjoying themselves on here, and learning. What more could you ask for? Modern structures and beautiful women garbed in futuristic dresses? Trust me, that wouldn’t be a step forward at all.

And btw, I don’t mean to sound insulting but…

…inventions that you could cite to honor humanity.

…made me laugh. Time to get life into perspective, don’t you think? It’s a good program, but… it’s just a program

I don’t know if you’ve seen my work on my site or not, but maybe that’s an example of stuff you’re looking for?

The latest head I did, as a test to see if I could capture a nice looking female head using zspheres turned out rather well. Even though I did’nt follow through with the ultimate details of pores, and excess wrinkles, I found Zbrush was quite capable of making a very nice female head. I just never really “tried” to do it in Zbrush before.

One thing I think a lot of people who use Zbrush miss out on is the natural weight and volume that Zbrush can help create in a model. Zbrush allows for a way to model in 3D like no other application can IMO. I do not however, think that is an easy thing to grasp, even with Zbrush’s abilities. It took me a while to learn that, as you can see from my older work to my newer work.

But honestly, why complain about what other people are doing. If you don’t like it, do look at it.

Hello ChrisG,

Why don’t you start a cell phone challenge?

Make sure to enter it of course. Of the projects you mentioned it sounds like the “smallest” one.

Go for it.

I have seen this arguement before on numerous occasions. There are a lot of things created with Z2 at ZBC. There have been many landscapes created, Gary Komar has been doing “normal” (no offence Gary) females for a long time, there have been Zmachines created over time, normal animals and insects, normal muscled hard bodies, normal faces…etc etc…you just have to search around.
Personally I do the zombie theme etc, over and over and over…simply because, the monster and zombie thing is what I have loved to draw on paper for years since the mid 70s for the zombie thing…but that is what I enjoy making. Though I draw normal stuff…the scary stuff is just more interesting to me personally.

When I found zbrush v1.0 I translated my love of the twisted from the paper to the computer. It’s not all I model or can model, it’s just what I prefer to model at this time.

I always say, I will leave puppy dogs and butterflies to other people to create. Nothing wrong with it.

I have done some erotic stuff that I have posted on Renderotica. I get asked alot what program I use to make my pics, so I guess I do promote zbrush alot. I know I do in the real world with the circles I travel.

And it’s not always about anatomy knowledge for me, or lack of, it’s just a matter of creating what floats into my own brain pan and out onto the digital canvas.

Though Zbrush is just a fun modeling tool, why would I want to use it to create telephones and or cell phones…tons of free 3d models out there to set up props for a scene…Z is the ultimate in organic modeling imho.

I draw heads on paper mostly, and do the same with Z2…it’s relaxing to me.

To me there are alot of things that are best left to regular ole “take a picture” type mediums. And alot of that can be translated into z, but since monsters at this time don’t seem to really exist, I will continue to crank out distorted, mutilated, phantasmagorifical (sp) and nightmarish images…simply because, it’s relaxing, fun and it’s what I do.

But if you want cellphones and vehicles or inanimate objects, you can easily post your own challenges to the community in the challenges area and see if you get any takers. That type of a challenge might just take off nicely, who knows.

Saw this thread and thought I would add my piddly 2 cents worth.

I am not offended and I hope I didn’t offend, but honestly from the original tone of things you haven’t gone through many of the galleries of the users here to see what has been produced over the last couple of years. You might just get astounded. Click on Search and type in a genre of choice.

One other thing I would like to mention and throw out for maybe more views and discussion are the movies. Most of the time in the past you have people in rubber suits and rubber masks playing the characters in fantasy, sci fi and horror movies. Today you have alot less of the special effects makeups and more use of CGI. With the exception of the LOTR movies and a very few others, most of the cgi created characters used and imposed in movies are still pretty low budget looking creations imho. The barrier to realism just isn’t crossed that often and you can tell it’s cgi. The Dawn of the Dead remake married both the old rubber ways and enhanced cgi effects to the finished picture, which really made for a effects experience. Cgi to me should enhance movies effects for added realism and budgetary restraints. No offense to the gaming community but most cgi characters in the movies have that “look to them”. Though I still enjoy the movies like that, the cgi characters for the most part lack that aspect of realism, (with few exceptions "Star Wars added somewhat imho). Do any of you agree with that? Do you think at the current stage of 3d technology actors can fully be replaced without having that Poser look to the characters? Should they be? Those questions I think are reasons why there are also so many creatures, monsters, zombies, shreks etc out there. Do you agree or disagree? What genre should the average Joe be delving into in their works and why? Just some fat to chew on. (Ron stops his ramble)

Interesting thread, ChrisG.

Looking forward to your future postings.

kind regards,
Ron

I’ve been trying to allocate time for one of the sample images I planned to post on these threads. It’s not easy, I came to realize. To stop everyone (for those who would give a … enough to hear what a stranger like me had to say) from guessing about the theme, I’ll just say that it’s the opposite of dark and gloom, well, sort of. So, instead of mutilated faces and monsters, I’ll start with the domesticated; fowls, sheeps, cows, butterflies, maybe kids, flowers, – which to me signifies peace, optimism, abundance. So you see, there are a lot of interesting themes that you could use organic modelers such as Zbrush for. (Well, at least, in my case, I use Zbrush to emulate traditional painting.)

I’m working on a rooster, or a colorful fighting cock. I don’t know when I’m going to finish it, but I’m sure I’m going to enjoy working on it.

(I’m not in the best of mood as I’m writing this, so… I’ll just end by saying there a lot of interesting themes Zbrush could be properly utilized for such as illustrations in medical science, forensics, biology, education, etc.)

Be back later.

There’s a lot of different stuff done in ZBrush besides monsters and monkeys. For example, perhaps you’ll like these roosters .
