WIP [Dino]

hey guys…

this is my first time here… i modeled a dino raptor in maya and then imported it in zbrush… its my first week using the tool and wow

ok so far so good… what would be nice… is some tips from you zbrush users… how to texture it… i mean… should the detail be modeeled or should i use a displacement … :expressionless:

  • i posted the reference images … well the idea of what my dino should hopefully look like…
  • the model in maya before zbrush
  • and what i`ve done in zbrush so far

Really nice! Welcome.

Can your render engine handle the poly count? If you’re rendering in ZB, then most would add the necessary detail to the mesh itself. There are quite a few threads dotted around that discuss displacement maps and workflows for different apps. Good luck.:+1:

Hi [.Q.]

Like your Dino, nice work :+1:. I’m pretty new too Z-brush but been working in Maya for a while. Just been playing around in Z-brush for one week, trying out displacement and getting a basic understanding of the program.

My tip:
I agree with Moochie, it all depends on what renderer you are going to use, if you use Z-brush polycount is usually no problem. If you are going to render or do animations in Maya, polycounts do matter. Looks like u are using SubD´s for your modelling so I would suggest not to go any higher in polys in Z-brush, with that I mean don’t make the base mesh you use in Maya more detailed. You can divide the base mesh in Z-brush but don’t import any higher mesh back into Maya, try instead making use of the displacement map for detailing. As far I can see you are using SubD´s that works great with displacement so give it a try. I would even recommend trying too get rid of the higher levels in you’re SubD model before exporting too Z-brush. I believe you can get the same result with displacement as you get with higher levels in your base mesh but try it out for yourself. There are some great threads in this forum about displacement Z-brush too Maya check them out.

This thread gives a nice explanation on this subject:

Will keep an eye on this one!!
