WinXp weirdness:

Everything 'Read' Only??? OK; I've done my utmost here; reinstalled WinXP 3 times; even replaced my 'Cmos' battery and Bios.

Yet, when I do a clean install, all my files are coming up as ‘read only’ on all of my three drives, even after deselectinging the properties in the folder options for ‘read only (subfolders included’). This is an ‘Administrator-only’ driven machine, too No network, nothing…
Anyone know what the f***s going on??? My client’s desperate for some much-awaited feedback!!!

big (really big!) help!

First thought and maybe you’ve checked this:
How are your drive permissions setup for each of the three HDs?
Sorry I’m on win2k here, but I believe it’s similiar for xp…
(My Computer > right click on C: > Properties > Security.
Is ‘Allow’ checked for all entries in the list?

Ok well i am pretty sure you only format the windows partition and have the files on a different partition, and because of ntfs you can’t acces them because you formatted

Try to take the ownership back: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech

Thanks for the replies guys -

joe_seig - I don’t have this tab on XP Pro

pixelsoul - You’re right; exactly what I did… I’m pretty sure I used this same method before without this kind of thing happening though:+1:

That ‘Security’ tab will show in XP if you go:
My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > then uncheck ‘Use simple file sharing’ (at bottom of list).
This will allow you to see the permissions list for your drives and files/folders too.
Xp here at work, here’s a drive:

Not sure if you even have your problem resolved, but check out Creator Owner and Everyone to see if giving Full Control to those works.
You may have to wait wait wait for all the files on the drive to be updated, depending on how many. Or just try it on a file or folder to test, instead of the whole drive. yay microsoft.

Hey thanks Joe!
You certainly learn something new every day, and they say ‘ignorance is bliss’…
They’re kidding, right?! Thanks again - my permissions were set up as yours were anyway, and now only the folders (not the files) are ‘read-only’?!

Chris

Heheh computers + ignorance = bliss,
until computer + microsoft = problem,
then user + job = stress,
so ignorance = stress?, hah, had a HD fail here yesterday, yay for maxtor.

Just found this link which may help… http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308418

*edit…also now that you have the Security tab viewable, pixelsoul’s link concerning taking ownership (Advanced > Owner tab) looks good, maybe applied to the three drives.
also the Advanced > Effective Permissions tab is covered in the link above…

Yeah, XP has issues for sure. I just went through something silly with it, and had joe_seig test and it worked - he wasn’t using XP! He XP users cannot properly log into and work with WEBDAV even though it is HTTP protocol and MS invented it.

I feel for you Atwooki!

Thanks for the help and empathy, guys
now to wait for ‘element5’ to work on the ‘new’ activation

Seems I’m not alone with these occasional oddities, then…
all seems to be in order now (though I can’t imagine how this came about in
the first place?!)
Looking forward to settling back into a bit of artwork now…

How you doing Jason, BTW? :+1:

Chris

OK Atwooki, playing with my new Wacom Cinitq 21u! Oooohhhhhhh!

Have some work on a feature coming up, interested?

OOOh!
Jealousy and blood-boiling arousing  What a great toy… whoops, I mean tool!!
Just PMM’ed you btw

cheers

Chris
