Windows Security Patch

>>> HERE <<< is a link to Microsoft’s new security patch for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003.

A simple install that corrects a serious graphics rendering engine vulnerability preventing remote code execution…

Sven

[addendum: It has been suggested by several people that I add a caution here: Be sure to read the complete thread before you proceed to install the patch. (specifically, read the posts by Aminuts who experienced a rather drastic loss which may or may not be related to Microsoft’s latest fix.) ]

Thanks for the link. I would have forgotten about it already…

funny thing…after I updated last thursday…all my textures disappeared…all the directory structures are still there etc but not a single pic or alpha. I have lost about 5000 reference pics etc arrrrghhhhhh well some I have on cd somewhere but what a pain.

don’t know if it’s related to the update or not…however i have not installed anything else or done anything else etc…no viruses nothing. system restore did not bring em back either…grrrrrrrr.

so if it happens to anyone else…please let me know!!! maybe i can narrow it down somehow.

Ouch! Nuts,

This is a rather sobering thing to hear. Was it an A, then B event… installing the patch and immediately, the images disappeared?

If so, that’s a pretty harsh consequence! Supposedly, the patch only deals with Windows MetaFiles (I don’t remember ever having that file type on my system… but, as I understand it, the threat involves having a modified WMF downloaded to your system while visiting a hostile website or from an email, which, when viewed, installs a malicious, exploitable program. More details at the link.)

I installed it yesterday and have had no problem, as far as I can tell.

I’m hoping there was no cause-and-effect in your case. I really hate the fact that these kinds of patches are even necessary and always feel queasy about installing those CYA releases from Microsoft. But the MSM and industry news coverage on this particular vulnerability made me nervous.

Don’t you just love Windows?

Sven

…as the Service pack 2 all disturb on my comput (for private use always on Sp1 ) I don’t want imagine the number 4
Courage Aminuts :technology want heroes !

Thanks for the link Sven. :+1: I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a wmf file, but who knows, I might yet… The install seems to be ok so far but I tend to view Windows as a creaky airplane that some chap has to keep crawling out onto the wing to fix with duck tape…

well they were there right before I updated, curiously enough i had just been thinking about saving em all to cd so was checking the folder size to see if they would fit on a cd or if i would need to save em to a dvd. of course it had to be dvd and i was out of blanks so figured I’d last weekend when i could pic some up.

then i did the update, once it was done i restarted and fired up zbrush went to load a couple alphas and marcus’s plugin says they don’t exist…i think huh?

go look and sure enuf they are gone…first thing i did was scan for viruses and trojans with 3 diff programs all came up ok.

anyways…they are gone so i guess i better get busy!

Hmmm sorry to read that. The updates did not alter any other files on my system. Guess I’ve been lucky…

On one of Windows “patches” picked up a neat problem.
At least once a week, when the computer is turned on
all the words on the screen are gibberish.
You must solve the problem by doing a restore.
Problem is to navigate a sea of gibberish to the menu
Both Dell and Compaq are aware of the problem.
If you are lucky you will get someone honest at Microsoft that
will admit to the problem.
Even if you do a format it does no good because the information
is now on the inards.
Have fixed all computer to avoid “patches” in the future.
If they want to take over my computer they may, I’ll share.

Also your creditcard, online bank account and love letters :stuck_out_tongue: Seriously unpatching is the dumbest thing there is… i know people who still havent got SP2 installed and they wonder why their computer is so slow… and where all those popups are comming from

One problem don’t have is popups. As far as having the type information
you descibe on a computer, lots don’t
Wish to thank you though for contacting Dell, Compaq, Microsoft ( thanks Eileen), after I did.
Shame Aminuts missed them.
They must have changed what they told me.
However the more people that download “patches” that can’t be “fixed” the more time I save.
Where on your computer are the creditcard and bank account stored.
Pass on email love letterss.
Same people probably have xsi.

You don’t store your creditcard number… but if you leave your pc open to be hacked, chances are a keylogger will be installed… and just when you make that purchase :sunglasses: This is actually where this exploit was being used for in the wild… took you to a website to install a rootkit and was created to receive details about creditcard / paypal

Anyway it was just an advice… same as locking your door when you leave your house. About loosing files or compatibility problems that is what backups / images are for :+1: With a gazillion different systems it is impossible to have a flawless test although microsoft does test all patches very very thorougly…

Gotta admit I’m another user who stopped with the SP1 update. My impression of SP2 was that Microsoft wanted to get too “up-close and personal”… although I have opted to promptly install most of their security patches.

One of the best things I’ve done recently was to scrap Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox 1.5. Faster for sure, apparently much safer and infinitely more fun to use… and never a popup.

For my Firewall and virus scanner I’ve been using the free version of Zone Alarm and the free version AVG for years, again with no problems - knock wood.

For me, it’s whatever works and k.i.s.s.

Sven

…you want ruin the industry of the Anti Virus company?
Good choice

I have seen cases where AVG missed allot of virusses… would never use it myself but it is free… better choices are Nod32 or kapersky try to avoid memory hogs like Norton  Coporate client is ok…

aminuts, isnt it possible that you may still have the data on your drive and can use some data recovery program to find it? maybe its hidden somehow too but i doubt that.

Buckle up, this will be a long one.
Slow readers are advised to skip.

All our advice, hopefully, springs from what we see, know, and unfortunately
have been told.
To me until the past year or so, Microsoft could basically do no wrong.
The thought process was Windows>Microsoft were the 900 lb gorilla.
They had the money, resources, development teams. If something was wrong they would not put it out.
They had Bill Gates.
I have/had, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98se, Windows ME ( yeah I’m one of those, this is when the disillusionment started), finally Windows XP.
When I first got Windows XP, was one of those who rushed to get the newest patches. “They will never hack me” . Sure.
Sp 1, was downloaded three times, have dial up, ( old fashioned and cheap)
The download started at 8:00pm and finished at 4:00am in the morning.
Unzipped, ran it. The screen came up at size and with text too small to read…
Will not beat this to death, over the next two days, restored, uploaded etc.
Thought either I or my computer was to blame, can’t be Microsoft, Bill wouldn’t let something like this out.
Well after a call ( several to get a human)found out that not only did Bill know about problem but he, at that moment could not do anything about it.
Bottom line was that the tech people talked me through a procedure that left
sp1 but rendered it inoperable. OK , has to be my fault, right?
I have a patch that is worthless, taking up disc space that could be used by orcs.
Sp2 comes along, announcement on my computer,I run and download ( sucker for punishment)
I actually thoght this was the solution to the sp1 problem.

You guys with swamp land to sell must be smiling now.

Again the fun started after the restart.
This reply is getting long so will summarize sp2.
Microsoft “human” told me that within the first few hours of sp2 release
the problems were in the thousands. The technicians were encouraged by their supervisor to send the problems back to the computer manufacturer to
cut back on the work load.
Compaq, put a special link on their site and an announcement giving
Microsoft’s number. Eventually they put out a patch to solve the other patch.

Dell put another option on their automated response that told you Microsoft’s phone number. This was the only time in my years with Dell that I ever got a snotty technician on the phone.
Have a few computers ( Dell, Compaq)
Finally solution based on what an honest lady from Microsoft told me. format
the son of a bitch.
I did.
No more patches.
Bill, you win.
With my kind of luck,I will be hacked, the hacker will find the heads unfinished, the scripts not run, the links.
I am willing to share my toys.
Think of all the security downloads, programs sold to aid in security threats,
patches, patches to fix the patches.
You have an 80gb memory computer with 40 gbs devoted to protecting the
other 40

I made this thread long to give you all practice with your speed reading skills.
Fortunately this thread is in the section noone ever visits.
Doubt I would make top row.

 Thank god you are not my sysop lol…

Hesitate to ask.
