Why am I always modeling ugly beasts?

Hey there,

I’ve been learning ZBrush for a few days now… And I already found out that I’m cursed for some kind of pattern all my models seem to have: They’re all plain ugly. I used to model and animate nice, funny stuff (see here: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=131637 (I hope it’s allowed to post links to other forums…?), but since I got ZBrush all my models are really somewhat distracting. Soooo… Is that a curse? Help me!

Had an pea soup lately? just kidding.

There’s nothing wrong with you. You are just getting used to a different way of modeling. I think the heads you have done have character so I kinda like em but as you can tell by my nick…I am nuts.

maybe you should check out the box modeling tutorial and some of the others in the practical guide for some modeling tips in Zbrush that would be more maya like or what you are used to.

And don’t worry, you’ll be doing some awesome models in no time. Zbrush kinda just comes to you all of a sudden in increments. Things seem impossible then suddenly they click…it’s magic.

I had a post for you, but your message got moved.

Anyway, i would suggest using the smooth edit brush feature and morph brush, if you haven’t checked them out yet.

Thomas your a great modeler. All I can say is you still need to get used to the feel ZB. It’s different animal all together. Being that your modeling techniques were already polished before trying ZBrush why don’t you try using some of ZB’s other features to bring your toon like models to a new level? You should import a few, and practice some texturing, and mapping on them, for a while, and by the time you’ve got the hang of the texturing features you’ll probably have an all around feel for ZBrush.
That’s what I would do.

Try to play some script about modeling head for very understanding the feeling of Zb
(pixolator or MtB or…)

Whew, thanks guys! I actually thought my thread has been deleted because of the CGTalk Link, but here it is!

Well, I’ll hop into some Zscripts now (just jumped over the practical guide as of yet) and post updates later on, thanks for all the comments, guys!

Edit:

@Pilou: Where can I find ZScripts of Pixolator modeling heads?

A couple of them come with Z2 I believe but you can also find some in the quick links section. They are for 1.55 but should probably work in Z2…just won’t show any of the cool new z2 features.

z2 comes with loads of scripts in the help section. click on list all and roam around checking em all out.

Hey guys,

Heres an update!

Ahhhhh better and still has character…what more can ya ask for?

Each trial in Z is a new adventure. So much to explore!

looking good! keep it up!

I think it is difficult to make non-ugly models with this level of detail.

I know that people with near-sightedness can agreee with me, the world is a much more beutiful place without the glasses :-]
