What's with the camera pops?

So if you hold alt + hold right click it will pan the camera around, if you release alt while still holding the click, it will zoom, however, if you panned the camera and then released alt the camera pops to another location before zooming… doesnt seem intuitive… the main problem being sometimes I am panning and accidentally let go of alt before the click and have to fix my camera.

Is there a way to disable the alt (and ctrl) release? Id rather just using ctrl + right click for zooming and alt + right click for panning.

The zoom and rotation point used is the last point clicked on the model (Subtool). So if you alt+right click on the nose it will zoom in on the nose. If you use a mouse stroke to pan but click on the chin then when you go to rotate or zoom the view it will zoom/rotate on the chin, unless you right click on a different section of the model. When you don’t understand that is what it’s doing it can seem confusing. Once you understand that it’s your latest click on the model it makes it more natural.

There are diferent ways to navigate in ZBrush.
The best and the last way navigate is what you describe in the last line.
All by right clicking. While pressing Ctrl -> zoom while pressing Alt -> pan. If you don´t press any button right click -> rotate. The major benefit of this method from the olders is that where you click is where the pivot will happen. So if want to zoom in a hand just need to right click on the hand and press Ctrl and drag.

And there’s the Axis Plug. Which works fine in this version of ZBrush

@MentalFrog Yea, I actually noticed the “last point clicked” behavior when I wrote that post, definitely useful. However, the camera pop happens if you pan and then let go of alt (while still holding right click). It just seems like a bug, sometimes the model is barely visible in the viewport.

@][-][4Z4R][)) I use the navigation you describe, and could probably even get used to the behavior when letting go of ctrl or alt, but not when the camera pops to a different location first. If this just exists for legacy reasons, it would be nice to be able to turn it off.

I recorded a quick capture of this happening (excuse my cold).

It’s not a bug it’s designed that way. The popping is because it’s keeping track of your stroke.

ALT+Right Click = PAN

ALT+Right Click then Release ALT = Zoom

So if you hold alt and drag and then let go of alt it’s zooms using the stroke.

CTR is the opposite

CTR+Right Click = Zoom

CTR+Right Click then Release CTR = Pan

Again the popping is actually because it’s using your stroke.

They should allow the user to switch off the release CTR and release ALT functions and just use CTR to zoom and ALT to pan.

However my preference is to completely ignore the CTR option. I use ALT+Right click to pan and then ALT+Right Click Release ALT to zoom. The reason is because in my mind it’s easier to adapt to the release timing of the ALT(CTR) button. If I use two different buttons (both ALT & CTR) the release of the button happens when I’m quickly zooming and panning, which results in the unnaturally popping sometimes.

Hope that makes sense.

I see, so you really only let go of alt in order to start a zoom, you wouldnt pan and then zoom. Since i was using ctrl and alt separately instead, this feature is just a nuisance (ie, when toggling between the two quickly, you might let go of alt before the click)… I will try using just alt and see how that works. Thanks.
