hi william from kenya! this is robert from germany. i love to do all the same and my favorite books are written by lovecraft and gibson. gibson goes fine with music from move(jpop) (early books only, though)… lovecraft’s better without music.
cheers!

read these books
The Gormangast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake
one of the most original and wildest fantasy books ever written with exceptional descriptive material
PS NO MUSIC whilst reading these - let them suck you in
Great music I like is from people like Zimmerman and Garbarek
have fun Kenya man
I see you have “The Golden Notebook”, well, anything else from Doris Lessing is good too. The canopus in argos series is great.
My favourite is anything from Umberto Eco.
Baudolino being number one. Foucault’s Pendulum number two.
If anyone can’t get their heads around Foucault’s Pendulum, and without wanting to sound smart, it isn’t the easiest, listen to the audio book.
If anyone’s read the Illuminatus trilogy, give it a go too, it is the thinking man’s Illuminatus
Aside from book that teach me anything and everything I want to learn, I read anything written by Raymond E. Feist and also books written by Robin Hobb.
The first novel I ever read was The Hobbit at age 6. I read Tolkien a lot growing up, and his writing has always been a huge influence on me as a person. There’s really no contest for me as far as favorite writer/book… I don’t even feel it’s fair, so I usually skip him in a discussion of favorites because it “goes without saying.” I must also add… Peter Jackson is my mortal enemy.
Roger Zelazny is my other favorite author. That man had a wild imagination. He had so many ideas that he could afford to be careless with them in a way I’ve never seen with any other author. Others would dedicate entire books to the ideas that he would make minor plot points out of lasting only a few pages. The Fugue Battle in Creatures of Light and Dark is my favorite example of this.
Beyond those two, I’ve read a lot but Cyberpunk seems to have made the biggest impression on me. As a genre it rings so true to the way the modern world is going, minus some special effects. William Gibson is great for the more serious side of the genre. Neil Stephenson is more entertaining. I actually named my first son Hiro after “Hiro Protagonist”, the screen name used by the main character in Snow Crash, one of the most entertaining books I’ve ever read.
I loved The Hobbit, but never quite enjoyed LOTR as much, or as much as others.
I’d given up on this sort of fantasy 'till I met Thomas Covenant, created by S.R.Donaldson.
Very nice stuff …
i ll lower the tone a bit Gaunts Ghosts series of books brilliant future warfare books
W40K for those who already read them
I love craft, too
Great novels, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is my favorite.
Muß allerdings widersprechen. Die Musik von Andy Matern zu den Lovecraft-Hörbüchern von lpl records paßt extrem gut dazu. Und ist sehr dezent eingesetzt ohne zu nerven
haha! that story got me hooked forever! right now i’m into hp’s dreamcycle again (again!) and guess which story’s in front of me, right now?! dexter ward is my favorite, too.
oh, und hoerbuecher sind nix fuer mich, denke ich… vielleicht wenn ich mal nichts mehr sehen kann… also spaeter, gell?!
chem!
The Skillful Huntsman is one of my favs. Some really inspiring sketches and concept work in there. As far as reading material, I’ll always have a warm place in my heart for Neruomancer, Ender’s Game, and Stranger in a Strange Land.

Funny you mentioned Orson Scott Card and Heinlein. I just started Enders Game and bought Stranger In A Strange Land last week. Awesome books! I love all of the Tolkien books and the authors that followed: Terry Brooks, Tad Williams… Mythology books are the bigger part of my collection. Heroic tales, Sci Fi, Fantasy and art books like Brian Froud, Paul Bonner, Ian McCaig, Michael Whelan, Dali, Burn Hogarth…etc

@ krisz
you sir are a bad liar
, have you ever heard of Corvus corax ? (thematic band from germany , in the vien of "braveheart movie "score and “Conan 1”) surely lovecraft could suck you in with that type of music .
“Filii Neidhardi (audio only)” on youtube because i cant think of a better song to listen to as i read.
personally i listen to this band in Shuffle mode when i do my commisions they help me by drawing out the beast ^^ (passion)
(and you had better get that im playing around
KRISZ)
personally my favorite book of all time is “the Dark angel” by meredith anne peirce (because in the final 2 books she loses her writing style completely , meaning BAT-POOP-plotlines)
i may get heat for this and i Dont CARE , but "The War of the Spider Queen " a saga of 6 books is better than Lord of the rings is my all time inspiration
especially book 5 .
