What file formats will ZBrush open and work with?

I’m new to the whole 3D world and a client of mine wants me to be able to open and work with 3D files their manufacturer created and be able to adjust and manipulate them into advertising materials.

They sent me some .xgl files to work with. However, after installing ZBrush these files are grayed out when I try to open them. They can send me files in various formats and are asking what I need to work with.

I can not find a list of file formats that ZBrush can open and work with. Could anyone answer their question for me, or point me to something somewhere with the answer? I’m hoping I didn’t buy this program for nothing and am pretty worried now.

My client is in the medical field and these 3D projects they are sending me can not be recreated. They have to be exact and precise to what the manufacturer created.

Thanks in advance for any help!

These are the files that ZBrush Import will support, as to the import dialog dropdown list.

GoZ (.GoZ)
OBJ (
.obj)
Maya file (.ma)
Mesh Ascii (
.mesh)
Mesh Binary file (*. meshb)

Wavefront Object (.obj) is the most popular format used.

Typically you would use obj to exchange your 3d data with other 3d applications.

Thanks for the replies! I’ve uploaded a jpg with this message that they sent me of the file types they can save in their program. I didn’t see any of the file types you guys mentioned there.

Is there a program we can use to bridge ZBrush and whatever they are using? Like something that can take what they can create and then save or export it into something ZBrush could use?

Thanks again!

export file types.jpg

ZBrush “3D Print Exporter” plugin (included) can import and export .stl files.

Thanks again zber2!

I’ve had them send me a file. When I go to the 3D Print Exporter and click to Import an STL file and then click to import the file they sent me, it tells me “Error encountered while importing a file”. Then after I click on that, it tells me “STL file read in successfully”.

Not sure if it worked right or not. Could you tell me where the file went within the program, or how to go about making it a tool I can use? Please keep in mind that I’ve been working in this program for only a few hours now. Still extremely new to all of this.

Thanks again for your continued help!

After you click on “STL file read in successfully”, click+drag on the canvas to draw it then click ‘Edit’ button at top (beside Draw, Move, Scale, Rotate buttons).

What software package are they using?
