Wen Digo (First Attempt)

This here is my first attempt (Well, technically like the fifth, but everything before this just s*cked…) at using Zbrush, Took a while of playing around and getting a noisy texture that resembled fur, without using the fillament brush on every portion of which tends to make it looks like a chia pet and makes all the geometry of the model dissapear.

Tell me what you all think of it.

Accompanied by this post is a question regarding the filament brush, is there a way to edit the lengths and shapes of the ‘hairs’ it generates? Say, for instance, I wanted to create curly hairs, or really long hair that doesn’t wind up looking like the model stuck it’s finger in a light socket?

Hi Chadms, welcome to ZbrushCentral!
Cool image! I like the eyes. The hair is goof too. Overall neat image!
Regarding your FiberBrush questions, to change the shape try the gravity modifiers. As yet there isn’t a way to make it really curl, at least I know none. If it’s important, try selecting an Aplpha like 07, 31, or 32. Then use the SnakeHook brush to make the hair.

I just wanted to post and say this is a nice image.

As for one part of your question, I can offer one answer (there may be more): length can be adjusted using the Depth slider in the Draw palette. I’m sure you’ve also adjusted the Turbulence modifier in the Fiber tool, which adds random curliness.

Kudos!

nice!

Welcome chadms

Cool little guy! I’d be interested in the material that you cooked up, sounds neat and looks good on your model.

The fiber brush also has a thickness and shape modifier to it, unless you have the demo, not sure if it does there.

check the tutorial links on my Z-Place site (see link below my signature) somewhere I think in Upham’s Great PDF compilation is a tutorial on using the fiber brush that makes very realistic things like fur on animals etc…

For those that are interested, I used the following material and maps to generate the velvety texture, feel free to do with them what you like.

The Material:
White Velveteen.ZMT

The Bumpmap

The Texture Map

The key, I beleive, to the velvet texture is to use the diffuse-spline modifyer and generate several peaks and valleys, the sharper the peaks and valleys, the shaper the color diference between the “smooth” and “frilled” areas of the texture. Then, to enhance the effect in areas where more fur is desired, use the same material with the fibers tool.

Thanks all for your comments about the picture, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
