'Weld Curve brush' tolerance setting?

Hi,

I am trying to learn how to create some tileable IMM and Nano-meshes/brushes… I have created a tileable part of a rope in Cinema 4D that aligns perfectly along the curve, but when I enable ‘Weld’ in the ‘Brush modifier’ options, then it welds the connection points into a “pole” for each instance. Like if the ‘weld’ is too strong.

If I disable ‘Weld’ for the curve, then it aligns perfectly along the curve and I just need to ‘weld’ the points manually later under ‘Geometry’.

Is there a way to set a tolerance value for of the ‘Curve brush Weld’ option? Some of my IMM brush experiments also doesn’t align as perfect as this rope and then it would be useful to be able to increase the ‘Curve weld’ tolerance instead.

(I know I can change the ‘Weld’ tolerance under ‘Tool Geometry->Modify’, but does this affect the curve weld as well?)!

Hope someone can help.

Hi @tennet ,

This may be a case where I’m not able to tell you much without being able to examine the geometry being used. I’m not immediately certain if this is actually a welding tolerance issue, or a localized issue with the geometry in that location.

If it were generalized welding issue, I might expect to see problems in more locations?

Things to check:

  1. Disable perspective mode. Do the points at that end of the mesh align perfectly with the points of the other mesh at the exact end of the bounding box? Are the points the exact same in number? Is the open end of the mesh flush with the bounding box at both ends? Both ends of the mesh should be mirror images of each other.

  1. Was Deformation> Unify used on the mesh before creating the brush to eliminate scale issues?

  2. While I don’t know why this would be the case, I wonder if there might not be an issue with the direction of the normals with that geometry? It’s only speculation, but one way to read what I’m seeing here is that the points might be trying to weld across each other to the wrong side of the tube. Try reordering your points with MakePolymesh3D to see if that clears any issues.

If it truly is a welding tolerance issue, try creating the geometry with fewer points.

Otherwise, if you’d like me to take a look at it, please create a new conversation at ZBrush support with the email address your license is registered to. Mark it “Attn: Spyndel”, and let them know I directed you there.

Thank you!

Hi Spyndel,

Sorry for the late reply, but many thanks for your great answer. I will go through your steps above and see if it helps. I can send you the geometry via support also, no problem. I’ll get back to this post as soon as I’ve examined the mesh further.

Many thanks!
