Weird problem when changing topology

I’ve never really messed with the ability to set up new topology before. As I’m trying it for the first time I’m running into a problem. As long as I never hit “frame” everything seems to be working fine. The SECOND I hit frame, the mesh disappears to someplace above the screen. I then have to search for it. Alt+Left click now seems to create a new pivot point for the camera rather than acting as a zoom.

Even worse the mesh no longer accepts new topology points.

I’m about to lose about 12 hours of work if I can’t fix this, and obviously the ability to keep using the topology feature if I can’t figure this out.

Clue please.
