wow nice work. I really like the colors to it. Can you post some WIP photos if you have any? or a wire frame?
Looks great! The folds where his pants bunch up look too sharp in some areas. Also, I think these guys wore sandals instead of boots, but you can chalk that up to artistic license
Cute!!!
Single?
cool stuff, but where is the weapon you mentioned?
Crit: poly count seems to be high for the lack of silhouette.
Lookin’ great! Nice sculpt and textures!
My crits-
Definitely agree about the polycount. You could easily do this guy for 8K with no difference in sillhoutte.
The silhouette. You have a lot of very flat areas-his thighs the back of his calves-for instance. Also, you need to exaggerate the angles in his form-where his pants tuck under his chest armor or the shelving on his shoulder plates. This really helps the character read at a distance. Turn off the lights in Maya and turn him around at a distance-can you still make out his outfit?
I like how grungy he is, it really sells him. I would add more variation in the spec. pop out the metal in places (scratches and dings should have very hot tight spec)
He is a great work, just tweek some stuff to take him to the next level!
Great job!
Hi, Thanks for all the comments,
adio38 - thanks, i just post up some WIP images and wire… hope u like it.
dustinbrown - yeah… i sculpt it too sharp is because at the beginning i afraid the normalmap will be too blur and low quality…BUT… Xnormal is just too great… its bump out almosrt 90% quality as in zbrush… now i know, thank you
bicc39 - single? yeah i think so… i help you ask him
xerious3d - thank you. The weapon is the swords and shield. which here only have the sword… the shield… ( too ugly that i’m dont wan to show here ) rush work…
Gaboon - thank you very much for all the comments. I’m sure with ur comments, my next artwork will be better. And bout the polycount… my brief is max of 12K ( include weapon ). which i think is a no problem for PS3, so i just use to the max. I totaly agree with you its way too much and also need to exaggerate the angles in his form. Thank you very much…
Really cool man, really cool. You say this is game art, was just wondering if it was for a commercial game or something you’re making yourself/on a team?
{SeanL} - Thank you. it is just a portfolio for my studio. it is not a real game
TOPOPOTATO - THank you.
And here are the turn around snap shots from zbrush

great work… i really like him.
one thing that i think needs abit of tuning, and i’m not sure if thats been said before: his feet look a little short… maybe you should make them a bit longer… their width seems ok, though…
apart from that: very nice work
Excellent work! Great post!! I’d love to know how you have done the textures! They are clean and well balanced. Love it!
Aww, it would be so excellent if this was for an actual game. The model is freaking awesome man.
Romans wore tunic, and not pants. The colors are not properly represented, though there were the Praetorians who wore black armors. The leg plates are rather medieval than roman style (especially the knee plate). Romans had no shoes or boots they wore sandals (Caliga).
Otherwise, great sculpt, but even if you are creating an imaginary roman character you should base your sculpture on solid references. I have a pretty large collection of resources on roman militias
Gunnahan - thanks for the comment
upham - thank you, 1st i got the normalmap, then i get the channel col from it, occultion and fullmap. all base texture is photo.
{SeanL} - Thank you again .
Jester - hi, thanks for letting me know more about the real romans, specially those small detail of history. I will be more careful for solid reference next time . thank you.
And here is the simple WIP progress of this model. enjoy
