Vray Displacement Problem

Hi All,

I’m having some serious issues with VRay Displacement in Max7…or so I think?!
I’ve been working on low poly models (max to zbrush) for high detail (around 1-1.5million polys enough for my pc) and then I go to create the displcement map using this procedure:

  • Switch to lowest subdivision
  • apply 4096 x 4096 texture and click new.
  • Goto texture (under tools) click on colour-texture button
  • then UV>txr button
  • then UV check button
  • then AUV tiles button
  • then UV>txr button again
  • By now my mesh is a multi-coloured patch work with black seams everyywhere.
  • So I press fix seems (at 0 value) which removes the black seam lines on the mesh.
  • Finally I click on displacement (under tools) click on adaptive, smooth UV and mode and set my size to 4096 and click on CREATE DISPLACEMENT.

In 3DS MAX:

  • I import mesh and convert to edit poly
  • I apply a Vray displacement modifier and put the tiff map in its slot, with 3dmapping selected.
  • Phase/shift are set around 8 and -4
  • I drag the material fron the vray displacement modifier into max’s material editor and change the UV tilling to -1 (so it flips the zbrush displacement)
  • I choose vray as my renderer, select adaptive subdivision and then click RENDER

This method has been working for a while…a little tweaking was required in max (such as setting the Vray to adaptive subdivision when rendering to get rid of these wierd black holes in my mesh that only appeared when rendering).

BUT NOW…this method just doesn’t seem to work at all, AM I DOING IT RIGHT, or is there another method that actually works everytime.

PLZ SOMEONE HELP, itherwise my showreel will not get finished in time.

Thx in advance

Sonder!! :+1:
