Virginie Ledoyen

Hi, here’s the latest model I ve been working on. Its going to be a portrait of a french actress, Virginie Ledoyen, and then maybe I might include the model as part of my new demo reel.

The “hair” is just a mock-up to try a hairstyle, I could really use some critique on the rest of the model though!

Thanks for looking.

I think you are off to a great start. The way you are handling the clothing wrinkles is going well. The one thing that pops out at me is the brow region. Right now her outer brows are too strong and prominent. Soften that area up a bit imho.

Looking nice, but the eyes are really bothering me as they’re not smiling like the rest of the face. As you can see in the reference pictures, when she smiles here eyes doesn’t look like that.

And the teeth are too long and not wide enough, the foremost ones at least.

Great start! Nice detail on the clothes.

I agree with the comments about the brows protruding too much and the eyes not smiling enough.

I’d add to that, her eyes are slightly slanted upward from inside corner to outside corner more than in your model.

I think her jaw looks too round from the front in the model. It looks fine from the 3/4 view though.

I also think her right foot should be a little further back for balance and possibly length. It feels just a tiny bit short to me…

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your progress.

i happen to like this actress myself. i think its a good start but things that stand out to me right away as off are, the teeth are too narrow in the front, the head seems a little big and wide for the body, and the ears are not out as much as they are in your ref pics. the crotch area looks more masculine than feminine if you know what i mean, also the folds there are not correct. also even if she has those lines under her eyes you’re over doing it, shes looking more like julie delpy because of that. folds on the armpits look strange too. i hope you don’t take all that the wrong way, i’m just trying to help.
perhaps you’re running into the head width problem because of modeling in ortho mode then rendering in perpespective, i don’t know though.

Virginie !
Nice, it looks like her !
Keep posting !

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys, lots of things to work on!

Bryan - Thanks, I think you’re right, it does seem a bit too much in the profile. Also, now that you pointed out the brow region, I noticed that my “curve out” for the brow happens too high on the forehead…

VABG - Thanks! Yeah, I think I need to put those subtle wrinkles around the eyes + work on the ones I already have (they are more visible in the high res versions of the refs). Good point about the teeth.

poda - Thanks! Really good point about the eyes being a bit slanted, I was completely missing that.

I think I know what you mean about the jaw - I think it may be the area that I lifted up to make her chin more prominent, I ll see if i can adjust that.

I ll experiment with lengthening the left leg - also I think it maybe that it’s the jeans that aren’t equal in lengths for the legs.

spaceboy412 - Thanks, those are good points! I ll work on teeth. I think i see what you mean for the head - I think it’s a combination of things, like perspective distortion that I used there might be a bit greater than normal, I ll see if narrowing down the front of the face a bit would help further, but as far as the actual head to body ratio, I was actually thinking it pretty close, since she didn’t seem very tall in real life (but I could be wrong there).

I agree about the crotch being over defined. As for the wrinkles in that area, I was actually going for something like this.

As for the wrinkles around the eyes - I found it’s a good idea to exaggerate them a bit, as they tend to get washed out when skin shader is applied. I do need to work on them though.

I agree about the folds on the shirt - not too happy about the ones on the sides for sure, although I m not sure I know how to fix them. I might just redo them from scratch.

infamouskiller, gpepper - thanks guys.

P.S> I seem to have lost the edit option for my original post.

Great Job, will be great to see a beauty render of her…Keep to post!

What is your workflow? What did you used for model it (apart ZBrush)?

Bye

Looking great so far. Would love so see her get textured  :+1: :+1:

I had a bit of time recently to revisit this model. It’s one of the more finished ones that I have too, so it made sense.

I did a neutral face for her for texture and future re-use. I might do a smiling blend shape for her later though. Texture is photographic manipulation and projection done in maya/photoshop so far (i 'd tried a similar technique in zbrush but it began acting out when large res images were imported). This technique is described in great detail by Paul Fedor in the "Essense: The Face" book from ballistic publishing. I ve never tried photographic texturing before, so I thought it was as good time as ever to do so. It's very tedius and time-consuming, at least the first time round, but I am quite liking the result. I am probably going to totally wreck it in shading though haha. Anyways - here are the images. They are pretty big, I know - I wasn't sure which ones to pick so I picked all of them. I have no shame! The texture is in a “flat” shader (zbrush term) or “surface” shader (maya term) - basically just shows the texture and no shading.

P.S. - madmatt, if you still wanna know (after almost a year!) - I used maya to do the base mesh for the body in T pose - then posed her in Zbrush and then went back to maya to extract/create other accessories. Sculpted them to high res in zbrush. Uv mapping and projection texturing was done in maya/photoshop. I ll probably texture the rest of the body in Zbrush, since that would be quicker. Accessories would probably be a back and forth between zbrush/photoshop.

The texture looks really good. Nice work man, keep it up.:+1:

Very well done! And the clothes + shoes look great, too!
I hope to see the finished Virginie soon.

Wow. This is fantastic. Good job on the face. I love the smile. The clothing and texture look excellent. Well done. Nice to see some normal humans on the forum :+1:

She is looking great, awesome job on the face textures!
