Vector displacement map, export settings

hello guys, working on my zbrush foot, im trying to export a vector displacement map, but when i try to export using the max sub lvl of the geometry, it says “you cannot export this, try to lower the subdivide lvl and try again”.

the sculpt has 6 subdived lvls, when i try to export the 6 subdived lvl it says so, but when i export the 5th subdivided lvl it works.

any thouhgths, tks in advanced.

Hi Johiko.

If you are referring to the SubD level slider in the displacement options for Multi Map Exporter, you would generally (there are always exceptions) set this number for your lowest level of subdivision, not your highest. Whatever the level of the geometry you’re exporting is. If you are applying the maps to the geometry at level 1, then set it to 1.

You cannot generate displacement for the highest level of subdivision, because no displacement is taking place.

tks for the answer, so if im using the lowest lvl subdivided mesh in maya, exporting a vector displacement map would need the lowest subdivision lvl, i ve heard that exporting that kind of maps needed the highest lvl of subdivision to export the most complex maps.

so, whats the better solution?

tks again

Displacement is the difference between the mesh at the export level, and the highest level of subdivision. You can’t create a displacement map for the highest level of resolution because there is no difference. You typically require a high level of subdivision to capture fine detail though.

[Edit] You might be referring to someone choosing to export a mesh at a higher level of subdivision than the base level ( and setting the sdiv level accordingly). If your workflow and software allow it, this may improve results with a displacement map. Generally the less work you ask a displacement map to do, the less opportunity for problems there are.
