Vector Displacement EXR export problem

Hi everyone

I am looking to use Vector displacement on my next product and am experiencing problems on some initial tests that I’m doing.
Essentially, I am, at best, getting a blank/black EXR when I export the VD map from ZBrush.

This is my workflow:

  1. Import OBJ (with UV intact)

  2. Run diagnostic with these settings (also shown in image):
vd Tangent, vd 32bit, vd Normals.

  3. Diagnostic back in my 3D app (Modo) shows a perfect sphere on ‘42’

  4. Back in ZBrush store morph target and subdivide to level 8.

  5. Sculpt a few simple shapes for testing (see image)

  6. Drop back to sub d level 1 and ‘Switch’ morph target.

  7. Preferences>Export>Vector Displacement Map>Tangent Flip and Switch ‘42’

  8. Export VD Map with Multimap Exporter (with same settings as before, see image)

  9. Resultant image is completely black. (I have tested the image in Photoshop by brightening it but it has no sculpted info on it at all)

Any ideas as to what is going wrong?

I just tested using ZBrush’s default sphere and didn’t get any problems. The image shows the map exactly as it loads into Photoshop. Perhaps check your UVs? And try sculpting something with the Snakehook Brush.

Thanks Marcus

I managed to work out what the issue was. Indeed there were some UV problems. I was working with the UVs that were automatically generated in Modo when the torus is created and they were not very good. The seams were right on the edge of the UV space and were causing issues.

Thanks for replying.
