edit: sorry if the old title was confusing…all crits are welcomed…also do any of the pros out there think I could cut it as a pro zbrush artist?

Vandalizer – WIP- Crits please

Hi everyone. I’m a long time lurker / first time poster and I just completed a new demo reel and wanted to get some professional opinions out there. I’ve worked in the industry (feature / freelance) for about 2 yrs. now but never as a zbrush artist/sculptor. I was looking for some critiques of my WIPs from some other professional artists out there.

This character is based off of the Todd McFarlane toy from the Spawn Collection (Vandalizer). I modified him slightly to suit my own tastes and I will be rigging and animating him as well. This is a Zbrush render and I plan to render him in Mental Ray as well. FX like realflow will be used to top off this character.

Special thanks goes out to Freedom of Teach for their modeling dvd (this really helped me with edgeloops and flow – who knew that spinning faces could be so much fun) as well as Zack Petroc for his Gnomon dvd (which really helped me learn more about blocking in musculature and giving the character weight.)

Anyways my reel can be seen at: [www.lawrencepasion.com](http://www.lawrencepasion.com/)

I you like what you see I’m available for full time / freelance work in the So. Cal area or for remote freelance work as well. Thanks in advance for your opinions. Thanks 2 everyone at the Zbrush forums.

great model, but increase specular …

Cool one, it reminds me to violator of the comics of spawn, looks like a second version of him. Btw, really nice website design and nice demo reel.

hey nice model there. though im not a pro but i think there is a specular issue. Also if u could distribute his mass equally(as in his wieght distribution seems to b out of alignment to the gravity) and make his eyes more real. i really like the bones and the tongue.

thanks for the responses guys.

-I’ll definitely handle the specular issue and the eyes when I do the MR renders

-Actually he’s a relative of Vialotor…I forgot how they were related though…I think they were brothers or cousins or something

-I agree with the comment about setting the weight back more…I just kept him in this pose for rigging purposes. I didn’t want to have too much geometry pressed up together because it would be a pain especially when painting weights.

Thanks again guys…keep em coming

Looks super! Definitely has that McFarlane character design feel. Can’t wait to see it in motion.
I’ll have to remember to download your reel tomorrow, when I get in touch with some faster internet.

Does the zbrush model still have zspheres that can be posed for it, or is it a polymesh and you posed it in another program? I seem to be having trouble with editing the mesh while it’s a preview of zspheres… I know to set a morph target of the zspheres before I start doing any mesh manipulation, but for some reason I still wind up with crazy polys stretching into infinity sometimes, or the mesh just reverts to the pure zsphere output. Any ideas? Know any tutorials that don’t convert to polymesh to work with it? The angler fish tutorial is one… From the looks of it, you set the zsphere resolution as high as you’ll want your mesh resolution, then from then on out you change resolutions using the geometry options instead, being careful not to go back and touch any zspheres unless you’re at the highest level. That might be it… 'm doing a bit of rambling, aren’t I? Hehe… well, just let me know if you have any rays of enlightenment.

Sorry I wish I could help you out. I started with a base mesh that I modeled in maya. I just started learning how to do it the zSphere way this week but I still bring it in to Maya for cleanup (edgeloops/flow / UV etc.) Here’s part of the base mesh that I started with

of course I lopped off the ears and nose and hands and feet and remodeled all of the face but hey it was at least a starting point right. I wish I could’ve kept the point order cuz that would make for a fun blendshape.

I’ll let you know if I learn somthing new that might help you…thanks for the comments again. I really do appreciate the input
