Using ZBrush for Illustration Work

Hello all,

I have been having a lot of fun learning ZBrush (and, man, is there a lot to learn). So far I have been concentrating on modeling (still wrapping my head around Zifs … ugh  ) and soon planning to play more with the paint tools. Here is my question, though:

How do you produce an image for print?

I have read about doubling the resolution of your overall image and then reducing it in half with AA, but I am looking for something a bit more. Traditionally a printer needs an image at 300 DPI and, sometimes, at a specific size (i.e. 5" x 3" or 10cm x 18cm, etc). All I see is how to set the pixel size of the document and there is nothing to set the DPI for a printer.

So, if there is anyone here using ZBrush for creating images for print, would you mind sharing your workflow?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dan.
you can find all about printing in Quicklink section and scroll the page at “Resolution” part.

One of the subject of that part.

Thank you. I missed these in that HUGE quick link section the first time 'round  .

Hey Dan

I’m not sure if I’m just repeating the quicklinks info, but here’s what I do-

In Photoshop choose a new document. Type in the size and resolution you want-e.g. 21cm by 29.7cm at 300dpi. Then convert the measurements into pixels and it should give you an accurate pixel measurement to use in ZBrush. So the above settings become 2480pixels by 3508pixels.

Half this document twice in Zbrush, this becomes 620pixels by 877pixels. I use this size to place the objects and markers. Then once finished, I double the document twice to get back to the required final output size. I clear the document, re-place the marker objects, (adjust the material’s noise and bump as required) and render.

Hope this helps…and makes sense.

Hi Dan,
there is a script to help you: cropper…it’s located within the zscript directory. Try it…and the AAhalf method.
